I recently bought a M with 9 speed. Engine was stuck and I am completely rebuilding. Now I have been told that 9 speed gives you higher gears by some and lower gears by others, But nobody was really sure. Does anybody know if the tranny makes you go faster or slower. Was once told you can turn gear for desired speed. Does anybody know for sure? Any help would be appreciated.

A 9 speed steps up gears 1 thru 4 and rev, when you are in 4th and pull out the 9 speed you shift back to first and from there up all the years are faster then normal except 5th which stays the same. when you are in revese high be careful it goes faster then 4th does forward, I know from experience.

The M&W and Hiesler 9 speed products for IH H and M gave you 4 speeds between the factory 4th and 5th gear. They did this by changing the ratio of the constant mesh gear set. When you are in over drive your PTO and Hyd belly pump are also running faster than normal, since they are powered from the same lower transmission shaft. The reason 5th gear is the same in and out of over drive, is because it is direct drive.
