Hi! I got a set of 16.9 x 38" tires. I'm cutting rims and widing them for a Farmall MTA. How wide should I make the rims? Since I'm making them I can make them any size. Just like your opinions. Thanks, Don

I have a set on 14" rims that I ran that way for a long time and always had good luck. I swapped them onto a 16" rim for a season and never could hook up as good. Put them back on 14's and it went back to hooking up great again. Just my experience.

I run 16.9x38's on a 14.5 rim, very seldom do I fail to place in the top 5. Been known to win a pull or to with this setup also, all I can say is it works for me.

I had a 1949 Oliver 88 that I pulled. I had Goodyear 16.9x38's on it and they were on a custom 17" rim. I could run 7 pounds of pressure and they would never squat. I could lower them to 4 and they would go down a little. I would say 17" because the worked great on that Oliver and she really pulled. It had a wide front and it would rare that up before it would loose tractor. It was always in the top 5.

Ive got a Super WD-6 with 16.9x30's on 16 inch rims and I would go atleast that far. Id say either 16 or 17 inches is probably close to what you want. That will flatten your tire out and get the corners to bite in, and you will be using all of the tread you can.

Good Luck,
Matt

this is just me personally i would go an inch wider then the tire that way you are getting more traction on the ground your tires lugs would be flater more level across the tire giving you better traction with more tire on the ground!

I have an 88 that I pull all the time but I have 4 sets of wheels and tires for them. Each set of tires are on rims that are an inch wider than the tire. I normally run my 16.9's because 18.4's arent allowed in all the classes I pull, anyhow I am reguraly in the top 5. Every tractor on our farm has rims that are at least an inch wider than the tires, we like to get as much tread on the ground as possible.
