I have spent several hours working both of these tractors and really like both of them and I want to build one of them for pulling but I don't know which one to pick. Does anyone have any suggestions or know any good or bad points about these tractors for pulling? With 18.4X38 what kind of weight class can you get one down to? Thanks!

The 1850 does have more gears , the 4020 only has a couple to pull with . I have been pulling a 4020 for many years in stock rpm , dyno and so called "stock" classes and I don't remember a 1850 beating me . There was a 1950T that used to run pretty good a few years back though , he would get us now and then , mostly he was pretty close to us . I'm a 4020 fan but I think the 4020 would still have the advantage for pulling over the 1850 . The pumps are easy to work on and M&W parts are more plentiful than for the Olivers .Most of the time the 66 series Farmalls are hard to beat , there is so much you can do with them and do it cheap .
As for classes I run 10 -12,500 with my 4020 , mine is a Powershift , oem wide front and still has cast wheels and 18.4X38 , about all I can get down to is 9600lbs . That's with 3pt arms off and 1/4 tank fuel .

It all depends on your local rules and what you want to spend/do. If your local class is pretty hot then the 4020 will wind up probably being easier to build.

If your just talking about a basically field stock class then the 4020 when properly tweeked will have a slight edge in h.p. due to starting with more cubes. For a slightly warmed up class with a factory/M&W turbo there really will not be a significant difference between the two. Does the 1850 have an over/under powershift? Under these conditions I would lean towrds the 1850 but then I am partial to Olivers.

As far as weight it all depends on what you are allowed to do/want to do. 9000 pound class shouldn't be a big problem for either with pressed rear wheels and a narrow front. They both can go significantly lower.

Good luck,
A.P.

We have a oliver 1755 that competes well with a 4020. The oliver compensates for the less hp with the abilities that the better shifting transmission.

Facts, I have farmed with both and pulled with both, that being said, I think that the JD would be a little simpler if u want to make it more than farm stock. Reasons 1) more parts available to build (2) unless it is a console I would rather farm with the Oliver, if it is a console I probably would keep it that way due to resale 3) the Perkins motor is really good stock but potential for performance enhancement is very limited. The best way to fix the Oliver is to get a 2255 tub and the 3208 engine and go from there. my opinions only Best of luck
