Does indexing the sparkplugs help at all?? What is involved? How much power does it give you? Thanks.

I think it depends on what engine you have as to how much it helps. Allis heads are a little weird
with their ovehead valve flathead. The plugs are in their own "chamber". I have NO doubt that indexing the plug so that the gap faces the piston
helps with an Allis engine. How much I it helps I don't know. I think it's worth the little effort it takes.

The most power from a single ignition system is obtained when the flame front starts closest to the center of the combustiuon chamber. (the flame front doesn't have to travel as far to get to the farthest edge of the chamber)Let's say that you have a 6 cylinder engine and you took 6 plugs where the ground electrodes face the center of the chamber & make a power run and then replace those plugs with 6 different ones where the ground electrodes face the edge of the chamber and make a power run; you WILL notice a difference. I don't know what your rules dictate, but if you can machine your head to place ANOTHER plug directly across from the first you will see a substantial increase in power. (2 flame fronts)(more complete combustion near the upper part of the power stroke). Ask any piston engine pilot what happens when you turn one magneto off..... Pappy

I did it on my flat head chrysler motors. I would think with flat heads, it would help a lot.

I read all the postings on this topic yes it is a wide range of opinons,the one thing that you need to do IF you decide that this is the thing to do is to CUT back the GROUND electrode,short'in it up so there is less electrode OVER the top of the center electrode,YA WITH ME,what you want to end up with is the GROUND electrode that is just over half of the center electrode,you MUST clean up any sharp edges so you wont get hot spots on the plug,the next thing to do is get the HOTEST coil that your ING.system can handle,then open up your gap till you get miss fire,a good place to start is 40 to 50 thousands,again depending on your coil,when you check your gap,check the total gap of the plug between ground and center,YA WITH ME THERE,index your plugs,and retune your carb.OK now your plug life can be effected by doing the for mentioned,BUT,I get lots and lots of runs out of mine,befor they need changing,PRICE MEANS NOTHING WHEN IT COMES TO VICTORY!

I read a recent article on an engine buildup for Hot Rod Magazine. They said indexing the plugs got them 15 additional horsepower, but I believe it was on a six or seven hundred horsepower big-block Chevy. It might make a small difference on a tractor. Whether you could see it or not on the dyno is probably a different story. Still, the genius is in the details - and it's a cheap modification to make.

I don't think it would help at all. I had to index the plugs on a big block chevy racing engine to keep the piston from closing the plug gap. Buy a couple sets of plugs, mark the plug with a marker where the electrode comes out of the plugs and curves to form the gap. Keep trying plugs until you find a set where the electrode is pointing straight down into the combustion chamber.

you probibly wont see a meassurable results but you take that along with a few other changes and they all add up.
