Thinking about building a Massey Ferguson with a perkins V8 for a turbo charged farm class. Already had a JD and now pulling a IH just wanting to build something different. The question I have is has anyone had luck with the Massey V8 engines? Kind of curious how much HP can be made with this engine and how durable they are? Any information is appericated Thanks Chris

Anyone can make a IH or JD run if they have a good bank account. A Massey requires a little bit of personal touch. I have a MF 1155 that pull in the 10,500lb class and up. It is essentially right out of the field, except with a few extra additions. It turns close to 400 HP.This tractor is extremely competitive in the farm classes, I very rarely finish out of the top 3. I pull approximately between 7-9 mph. I have 5 tractors and combines with this 540 engine and have had no trouble what soever. One tractor has 7000 hrs and still running.

I pulled 1155 have 1 ,2,3 place trophies in stock classes over IH , & J.D. . Like any fair puller you don`t winall the time. Hard to balance , but I had to deal with cab as tractor was used on farm. At stock h.p. was reliable but they are very exp. motor to work on . Lots of RPM , NOISE ,but don`t lug like your 6 cyl.Lots of luck .

I don't pull tractors, but would like to some day, but I try to catch all the pulls in a 200 mi. radius and I do see a lot of pulls. I have seen quite a few MF's pull with V8's and they don't have the luck like the IH's- JD's - CASE's. Most the one's I seen put rods out the block halfway down the track . Just what I have seen.

I have been told if running unlimited RPMs it's hard for the V8's to compete. The Masseys around here run in a class that is 3200 RPM limit if you have an inline pump, 3800 if you have a rotary and a 540 c.i. limit. They usually have more trouble hooking to the ground than having enough motor to compete with the top tractors.

Seen a few 1105's with 6 cyl's pull in Springfield Il. and Pickneyville Il. and they seem to have the power, but don't seem to get the right traction. Seen the perkins 540 V8 pull in 1155's- 1105's & 2705's and they just don't seem to hold up. On 1155, some one put a cat V8 in it, that thing ran like you would not beleive all the way to the end!

Click on the link below to see a picture of an 1150 and 1155 that pull around here. They give the inline six powered tractors a run for their money.

The big problem with the Perkins 640 is the heads. They just don't flow alot of air. They are also not very durable. I have made billet heads for the 640, but probaly not allowed in your class. Email me and I can give you more info.
