Intake Manifolds

I am playing with an Oliver 77, and have a question about the intake and exhaust manifolds. The Oliver intake manifold has a heat box built into it, to warm the intake air charge to help with cold ambient temperatures. Would power increase if the heat box was eliminated? And further, what if the intake runners in the box were removed and the box used as a plenum, similar to that used underneath downdraft carburators? Has anyone tried this, and what were the results?
