I have a 51 G John Deere that I am rebuilding this winter to pull. It has stock stroke and is bored .125 over with M&W pistons and has a Jerry's head and manifold. What kind of compression should I have with this setup and how do I figure up the compression ratio? What kind of fuel do you John Deere pullers use? I'll have to run some kind of racing fuel won't I? Around here we have Cam2 in 110 & 114 octane. Which would be the best? Should I mix it with 93 octane gas? Thanks alot for the help.

Comp ratio is measured by the volume of the cylinder plus the compression space (including gasket compressed thickness, valve relief volume in piston, minus any piston dome) at TDC in relation to space at BDC. Example: If cylinder space is 2000 cc at BDC and is 200 CC at TDC, 200 goes into 2000 10 times, resulting in a 10 to 1 compression ratio, marginal at best for good pump gas.

Depending on how much you have taken off the head(assuming you still have the cyclone head)you should have 100 plus psi per cylinder.Mine gained 26psi per cylinder just taking off 1/4 inch off the head surface.A couple of valves, new springs, and the head cut I gained 4 hp on the dyno from what it used to be.I had mine running on the dyno loaded down and had no ping at all and I was running Ammoco white gas(93 0ctane)with 136 psi of compression.Good luck with your G,Jack(TN).

I run a 51-G 90 over high compression aluminums with a flat style head. I use aviation gas, it works for me as well as racing gas and costs a lot less than the racing gas, aviation gas also has a little alcohol in it to. I add a little Marvel Mystery Oil to the gas for lubrication. Mine won't run on pump gas,it will just spark knock. My 2 cents.

Puller,

I pull a '38 G, with some "extra mods" too. I have had really good luck with with cam2 as well. But make sure that you dont hear a "ping". This means that, you are running too low octane. I had that problem. I run cam2, with two cans of octane booster per 1 gallon. Its a wild mixture, but it really burns hot, and get the job done. You can really tell that you have the good juice, when at a late night pull there is a 8 inch flame shooting out of the preasure out-let on the side of the block. Out of the block, not the chrom stack! Many singed gloves, and some hot hands, when trying to close them.

This year I am going to try and run a little Snowmoblie racing fuel in my test G at home. Its about 110, right out of the can, then add the special stuff. Good luck in the new season.

Ryan

P.s. I need to stress that different nights/days (enviroments) take a little different fuel. Remeber to try to locate a temp guage before you try anything!! THAT IS A KEY!!!
