I am new to the tractor pulling sport. I am 15 and very firmiliar with tractors and what there capeable of doing. I want to know how i should start off by bringing it up to about 1500 rpms then dumping the clutch or give is gas as i ease it out? simple questions I just want to know the basics. I will be pulling with a farmall 460 diesel that has a tuned up injector pump and a wide front. I will be pulling around south east michigan. Any tips will be appreciated. Thank you.

My minni mo runns better during my pull bring it out at 3/4 open on throttle but ease out on the clutch. Some transfurs can pull easer than other and I can come out with less throttle than that.As far as tipps I like to ride both brakes ease down the track to keep both tires pulling the same.In lighter class I like to run a faster gear and try not to get caught bye buzzer try to get throu bad spotts or I try in tall gear to really pull down hard on my old worn out engine. .

After you back up to the sled, and after the man who hooks the chain up is out of the way, make sure you have it in the proper gear that you want to pull in, with the TA in or out (some pulls won't let you use the TA). GENTLY tighten the chain, (take all the slack out of it) and gently let the clutch out with the engine about the 1500 level when the flag man gives you the green flag. You probably should have the throttle at the 80-90% level until the engine starts to bog down, at this point you can pull the TA BEFORE the engine boggs toooo bad or you lose traction with all the sudden horsepower. If you start to spin out, either hit the brake on the side that is spinning or get out of the throttle a little bit. If the front end comes up, you will have to back off on the throttle a little bit also. Most of these tips can only be fully understood with experiance, but we have all been there at one point and we are all still learning with each pull. It might help to keep a journal for each track with information on how you had the tractor weighted, track conditions etc and the results of the pull. I am going to start keeping a journal myself this year.

if the front comes up let off the throttle a little, you trying to get him killed, let off the throttle it will get a better bite and stand strait up, when it starts to get high, stand on it the extra hp will break the tires loose and it will spin out with the front end on the ground

I have been to a lot of pulls and the two things that I see the most are 1. Guys don't know when to pull the torque. When your motor is bogging down and you tires are not slipping to bad, pull it back. Don't let the motor almost die before you yank it because if you do it will spead the motor up too much, and you tires may spin out. 2. Don't let your front end rise way up in the air. Some guys really think that doing this gets them to pull further. Wrong, it lowers your drawbar, and prevents the maximum downpull onto the tires. Let the front end sort of float or weight it down. If it floats, you put your entire tractor weight on the back tires without the loss of drawbar height. Doing these to things will help you pull a far as you can.

I agree with Tim, don't get in the habit of dumping the clutch unless you like to repair stuff and can afford the parts. What pulls/groups are you planning on pulling at this year? I'm near Howell Michigan (US23 & I96) and hit pulls by several groups in the area.

Take care,
A.P.

No dumping. 1500 is ok but don't break something by dumping the clutch.

Remember that you want as much of your weight on the rear wheels. A small amount of lift on the front end is good. If you need weight in the front end to keep it down get it out in front as far as allowed. The farther front the least amount of weight is required. That means you can keep more weight in back. The front wheels don't pull anything and the weighting is simuliar to using a wrench. The longer the handle the less power it takes to turn the bolt. Like adding a piece of pipe on the end of a pipe wrench.

Didn't see it mentioned above, so I'll add, make sure your drawbar height is all the way up to whatever your pull officals decide is their limit. Equally important, be sure the drawbar is rigid and will not flex downward significantly under heavy pulling load. Good luck ! Be humble in victory and graceful in defeat. FJY
