Would a 1958 Allis D17 with the 93 HP 262 gas engine make a good puller? The block would be stock as this was provided by Allis with a diesel head. Understand that you should not pull heavy classes due to overloading the gear train but I would think that it would be very strong in the 4500 - 5500# classes.

We have a wd45 diesel with a 262 gas engine in it.Works great just use diesel pistons milled down comp. ratio is 12.5 to 1. We used stock rods and copper head gasket never had any troubles at all. The big problem is rules at most pulls. In NAPTA you have to run Div. 5 USAP says no diesel to gas conversions at all. Cubic inches are really limited in this block and the 460 IHC and Oliver 77 88 in div 5 3500lb class will stomp on the AC.

A little over 400 c.i. is about all you'll get out of the 262 block and it's hard work to get that.

Thanks for the feedback. We're pulling in GA where the rules vary from pull to pull. Most of our pulls are low gear only with 10% over stock limit on rpms and no limit on tire width. I was wondering if this setup would compete somewhere in the 4500 to 6500 class against JD B's, WD45's, and Farmall M's. Tractors here are no where near Division V.

Any idea what HP you're getting out of your 262 gas?

Our 262 gas in the wd45 put 95hp at 3600 ft elevation. We were still tuning on it and broke the gear that drives pto. when we had it on dyno.If you could get 400 ci. out of it that hp would go way up. We usually pulled it in 3rd gear with 14.9 38 tires about 9mph.

are you saying put a 262 block in a d-17? also are you saying the 262 block was available with a diesel head? stock horsepower on a gas 262 is around 71.

Sorry for the confusion. I did not give enough information to be clear. I have access to a D17 trike and a 6 cylinder AC 262 gas combine engine. I understand that the 262 gas and diesel were basicaly the same engine although I expect the pistons were different. The AC combine engine was rated 93 HP at the shaft. The same engine in a D-19 was tested at about 72 HP at the belt. I've been told that the 262 combine version ran 200 rpm faster and had a different carburator than the D19 version which produces the additional HP.

I am wondering if anyone has experience pulling a D17 who could comment on how good a puller one with a 262 gas engine would make?

was a d-17 a four cylinder? 262 (d-19 and gleaner combine motor) is 6 cylinder. also gas engine had flat head and pistons with combustion chambers, diesel had head with combustion chambers and flat head. propane pistons in the gas will add 40 psi of compression and bump horsepoewr to around 90 with right fuel/air setup.

I meant diesel has head with combustion chambers and flat pistons, not flat head. the 262 is flip flopped from what you would normally expect in gas and diesels. also if you try to put diesel pistons in a gas the stock rods won't hold the compression. a buddy tried it and bent 5 out of 6.
