Whats the difference?? Im not new to tractors, but I am new to the electrical work of one. I was wondering if i should use a voltage or ammeter on my pulling tractor. It has been converted to a 12v neg. ground alternator. thanks for any advice. Larry

An ammeter measures the amount of current passing through it which could be how much the battery is charging or how much the alternator is charging depending on how it is connected.

A volt meter measures the amount of voltage that is at the point where it is connected. It can indicate the state of the battery when the engine isn't running. Watching it after you start the engine shows if the charging system is charging it & to what voltage.

An ammeter requires 2 larger wires since the current must pass through the ammeter to be measured. A voltmeter doesn't need a very big wire since it only monitors the voltage.
