I just bought a John Deere 60 to pull with. I was going to build a power block for it but I don't have the money right now because I am also rebuilding a truck and really building the motor in it. What can I do to my 60 to give it a little edge over the competition? I don't want to do any major engine work. Thanks in advance.

Raising the compression would be the easiest thing...mill the head, or try to find some "LP" pistons...

Put your weight bracket as far forward as possible, 60s will come up in front easily. Power will not be a problem with the first gear, just get them weights right and it will do good. Ken.

Change to LP manifolds. you can use the same carb, it will feed a stock motor plenty of fuel....but the lp manifolds will allow you to increase the airflow. first gear is 1.5 mph so you will have enough power up to 75oo lbs in first gear.

Glen may be a little aggressive with his choice of rims since most manufacturers reccommend 14" rims for the 15.5x38s but if your rules permit the larger rims then go for it! Air & fuel mix is important. This may sound dumb but take your intake apart and make sure there are no obstructions...mud daubers love to crawl in those places. Fresh plugs and points are a must, I'd try using Autolite 386s over other brands. When you're getting the most out of the engine look to balance it right with weight distribution. It's just trial and error. Good Pulling!!!

Put a set of old hard Firestone 15.5x38 tires on 16" rims. Spin them backwards to sharpen them. Get the fore/aft weight balanced and pull in the 6500 to 10,000 lb classes.
