I have the chance to buy another 5020 that doesn't have a motor. What would be a good high horsepower motor to set in it? My uncle owns a heavy equipment parts company with a selection of Cat and Detroit engines. What would be a good engine to set in it if I was going to use it mainly for open pulling and some light farmwork? Thanks

My boss has a 5020 with a 902(???) Cummins in it. I don't know what all was involved in the swap, though. Thing screams but he doesn't use it for any bigger of jobs than he used to(9 shank chisel plow). Them dual straight pipes make for some nice stack music.

Cats are OK but co$t lot$ of dollar$ when they break. If you want more than a 318 go for a 8V-92. With the turbo they can work at 475HP. If you want to hot dog a little you can get injectors that will take you up to enough HP to easily break everything behind the flywheel.

I know where you can buy a 5020 with a Detroit already in it. Tractor located Eastern Iowa. Runs good. Email me and I would be happy to get you in contact with the owner.

Iowa is a little far off for me. I am from KY. I made a trip out there last Jan. and that is a long drive; especially with something that heavy. What is it worth roughly?

I know of a local 5020 that has been repowered with an 8V71. Makes a bit of noise and a fair amount of power. You could always drop a turbo on top if it wasn't enough. This on is in SE Michigan.

But the JD engine would probably be an easier swap. They also swapped 855 Cummins engines in them. There was one running over in Ontario a couple of years ago. Now that would be a bear!

A.P.

Put a JD 619 in it out of a 5830 chopper or something of the sort. Will bolt right in and give you about 300hp stock. You will have to do a little work to get your water plumbing to match up but not a big job. I have a 6030 with a 619 pulls 8th gear no problem.

I would like a 619 but I can't afford that. I can afford a Cat or Detroit with my family discount:) I don't mind the time that will be involved. I just need to know what size to look for. I would like to have something 350-400HP.

I like your idea. In that horse power range you would be looking for a 3406 cat. Real nice engine and loads of power. It would probally be a tight fit, some mods defentally but something that would give braging rights if done correctly. Are you sure that a 5020 will take that kind of power boost? I think it sounds like a lot for that drive train. I can defentally see a 6030 doing it and liking it. Good luck with your project.

I didn't know how interchangeable the large Deeres are. Sticking to a Deere engine would make sense. A 619 @ 300hp? That would crank! Cool! Love the 6030. Big ox of a machine.

I don't know how well some of those motors fit and hook up in there, but a MM 800 LP gas power unit motor would be awesome and still farm well. Don't know if it would fit without a lot of work. It is by far one of the best motors ever built according to power unit folks that remanufacture engines. If that is too big, find a 605. Probably would not match up well, but some folks like projects.
