Find a powerblock and flat head, use high compression aluminum pistons, a cold manifold, 3 angle valve job, remove oil bath filter in favor of a paper filter, and port out the head and manifold. I have a 47 JD-A with this setup making 55HP plus. But this setup is not cheap either. If you want to play (and win) your going to have to pay something. Just my humble opinion, and experience.

Bore it out.125 and buy you some M&W high compression pistons.Shave the head down to the eyerows(unless it has a flat head, then you don't have to).Get an electronic ignition with a good stout coil,or send (if has one)the magneto off and have it built for hotter spark.Put on a dry air filter too.I have also heard of changing the gears behind the clutch wheel but I don't know much about this procedure but sure someone else could help you there.Good luck.

check the rules and see if they have any regulations on the type of fuel used. i gained 2 or 3 horsepower going with 110 to 114 octane fuel with my 52 JD A
