G vs 70

I have a 56 John Deere 70 and a 52 JD G and I can get on the brakes on a hill and choke the 70 but yesterday on the same hill the G was chugging along with me standing on the brakes in sixth gear and did not choke at all.Will a good running G out pull a good stout 70?I want to hook em in the same weight class but have not been able to yet,maybe someday.I was hopeing some of you fellow JD pullers might shed some light on this subject for me,and maybe tell me of your experiences.Thanks Jack(TN).

Jack I would like to see an all-fuel 70 with lp pistons,and the head shaved considerable,cold manifold and the 70 duplex carb,and a "G" with the M&W pistons and cold manifoild pull together,the duplex carb should give the 70 the edge. I got a '51 "G" big,big and got busted by a 720 diesel on a power track. Do a little reseach on the all fuel 70. An all fuel 70 head and exhaust manifold go for 800 bucks that tells you something. later gman

If your 70 is a gas, it has the 5 7/8 bore. The G has a 6 1/8 bore and from the sound of what you are saying it probably has aluminum high compression pistons instead of the flat top kerosine pistons for low compression. With that setup a G will actually dyno out more horses than the 70. I should know because I have a G .090 over that pulls my father in law's 70 gas with .090 pistons to death. In the 7000 stock antique (kind of like Div. II, & we run a short chain) he will run out of power, and my G will get in a strain, but wiil slip the tires about 15 feet ahead of his stopping point. My 60 bogs down on a hill in 6th gear with no brakes, Do I need engine work? or are you exaggerating?

A 70 will out pull a G any day. I seen a 60 gas out pull an G in the 6500lb. class at our fair.

I think there's just something special about a G! The only personal experience I've had (this is the first year I've pulled my GW) is a pull a couple weeks ago in the E class (6-7000#). The only John Deeres were my G and two 70 diesels. The G outpulled both by a few feet. I've since modified my drawbar and weight setup so it should improve. It's probably got more to do with hitches, weights, and where on the track you pull. Sure was fun to beat them the first time out, though!
