New pickup or used semi??

I was strongly thinking about trading in my chevy
454 pickup for a new one with the duramax. However, my neighbor down the road has a 1978 International semi tractor for sale that is in real good shape. It has a single rear axel, 9
speed trans and a 290 horse cummins. It runs darn good and only has a little over 174,000 miles on it. And, it's all set up to pull a fifth wheel. He will sell it to me for $2,500.
Should I get the Semi and get a new, cheaper pickup or just get a new pickup with the Duramax? I bet that Semi can pull a 15,000 lb.
load real easy. I go to about 12 pulls a year.
What should I do???

I would go with big truck. Check local laws. In Alabama we can tag it as farm truck and law reads that we can go in any state and they have to honor the farm tag. As long as farmer is hauling his own equipment it is legal. With bigger truck it is safer due to bigger brakes. It is designed to haul more weight. We regularly haul 20,000 ON the trailer, a 36ft gooseneck, add truck and trailer weight, it is over 30,000. Most of you guys are talking about only hauling 1 tractor, hah! If you do not buy truck, let me know where it is located. I would like to look at it.

look, there is a lot of things to worry about when you buy an old single axle tractor.you have to know what your looking at.what kind of brake does it have?wedge? rockwell?what kind of shape the clutch is in? you metion just a truck.what about a tralior? all i am thinking is,you said you were going to use it for only a dozen times a year, lot of truck for that little use.you said it has a cummings, blow the air compressor and see what that will cost you.do you have your cdl? do you know what it will cost you to insure it?and the friends your going to have when you get this! i know from experrence. this is a 25 year old truck you are looking at.good luck . Semi all the way! I am a Ford man. Have driven the Durajunk/noise-o-matic, and the crummins. Not impressed. Pass alot of them on the hills. But a semi is FAR cheaper.

If you want to be legal with a 1-ton and gooseneck it all cost the same. Once you go over 26,000lbs Gross (truck, trailer, tractor, fuel, wife, etc) you fall in the same class as a semi anyway in most states; ie. CDL's, $300 tag, fuel stickers, log book, etc, etc, etc. Trouble with that is, when u want to go to the movies in ur 1-ton semi, it is still a comercial vehicle, tagged commercial, and looked at as commercial. Think the wife wants to have to have CDL's to drive it to grocery store? She will if you tag it over 26,000 to stay out of DOT's little hut on the Interstate! Check the DOT's laws in the states you want to run in before you pay $40,000 for something u can't use to haul your tractors with. When these new trucks way as much as they do, ad a decent trailer, and there isnt much room left for a tractor at 26,000. The Fords in a crew cab F350 will be abour 8500lb EMPTY add ur 6500lb gooseneck and put ur baby stroller on it and be over weight. Of course there is one advantage to the Durajunk, they don't weigh as much as the Fords or the Dodges, alot more plastic and alot less truck!

John

I bet you pass them all the time in the hills! When you are empty and they are loaded! I have yet to find a powersucker that I cant pass on a hill when we are both loaded! besides powersucker or duramaxy both V blocks you will not see many of them go much passed 180,000 miles if they are used much for pulling. As far as a semi definatly the way to go if you are hauling a long way to a pull! short hauls are fine for pickups but long hauls I would feel more comfortable in a semi!

Well, opinions are like **** ( we know how that ones goes). I knew that would make some Chevy and Dodge folks mad but facts are facts, Ford still has more HP and tourqe than the other folks and yes I have seen powersuckers with over 400,000 on them that work hard everyday. Infact, know folks that use all three brands to pull boats. After a couple of years, they now buy all Fords because of total owning cost being much less. It is expensive to rent a 1-ton while urs in the shop. I agree a inline motor makes more bottom end torque, but when u lack 100 CI from the other folks there isnt much advantage to 6 in row. I don't feel the durajunk will ever see 100,000 miles with major shop time. GM, deisel, aluminum heads; it just doesnt go together. Gonna be problems. Dodge is impressive, just a little down on power. But, you can take the baby cummins add on about $4,000 worth or Banks parts and outrun the stroke. Unless the stroke guy spent $400 for computer module, and then u will still follow him uphill.

But I diverse from the true question again to take a poke at the #2 and #3 selling trucks in America. Check with DOT and see what you have to do to be legal before you spend your money. Be carefull if you come to FL. They like 1-tons and farm tractors. Usually means about $2,000 worth of fines to them. $.05 a pound for everything over 10,000 if you are not tagged right, don't care where you are from or what is legal there. $150 fine for no fuel sticker. $100 fine if you are over 8.5'wide, this includes weight brackets, or anything sticking over the edge of the trailer. The list goes on and on! Big brother is watching!

If uncle Sam wanted to do something truley worthwhile for humanity, he would MAKE ALL STATES adopt the same weight, length, height laws and one tag would be sufficient for all states.

Is that a dodge I see following me? Doesnt he have a gun? LOL The durajunk is so far back cant see him anymore!

Remeber, i am picking in good fun. I would buy a dodge if the price was right. But if you ever see me in a Chevy, get me some help, something is bad wrong!!

I have to add a little here as well. Of course most of you are talking about the newer trucks but I know from experience that between a 96 Powerstroke and a 96 Cummins the Dodge will haul the same weight better and cheaper. We had a Ford and now own a Dodge. taking off with the load there is not alot of difference but holding speed wither in hills or on the flats the Dodge does better. Also with the same load I get about 2-3 MPG better with the Dodge.

Same year, both with 5 speeds, both with 4.10 gears, and both with within 4000 miles of each other. Had to put a new clutch in the Ford and one of the elecronic injectors?? when it went out. So far nothing on the Dodge. Oh both were stock except forthe catylitic converters were taken out and the Ford even had a K&N filter.

The Ford rode better and drove better but the Dodge had the straight axle in front like a 4WD. I am not really knocking either as they both have alot of power but this is what experience I have had.

As for the semi or the 1 ton, Lots of good advice above. You have to look at getting another trailer or fixing the semi to haul yours now. Traffic laws and maintanece also. However forthe price you said and the amount it would be driven I would think that unless you just want a new Deisel pickup I would probably buy it.

Depends on what and how many tractors you will be hauling. If it is over 15,000, I would go with the semi. Anything under that should be a new pickup. Hard to say that since I am a Ford man myself.

All depends on what you want to do with the truck when it isn't hauling tractors. I bought a new pickup to haul my tractor, and was looking at a semi tractor at the time as well.

I bought the pickup, and only regret it when I write the check every month. If I had to do it all over, I would have bought the semi tractor. A new pickup is $40,000, give or take. You can buy a lot of fuel and license plates for a semi tractor for that.

It's all in what you want, and how deep your wallet runs.

Ditto with the cummins. Just took ownership of a 03 Dodge with the HO/6 speed. Little early to tell but definitely has more than my 00 hummin cummins. Easily a better setup than the 01 or 02 durapad/allison we currently own.

A few things to remember. The semi is gonna be a lot more reliable and economical (as far as repairs). It'll get a little less fuel mileage but pull better. The ride won't be quite as comfortable as a regular full size truck. In TN I don't have to have CDLs to drive our semi as long as I'm using it for hobby (i.e. I can't get paid to haul stuff without CDLs).

A pickup is going to be more practical for general hauling, and a semi can bring it's own challenges. You will likely have to get a CDL to drive it, as I imagine it has air brakes. There are also inspections, fuel tax, insurance and the like to worry about, as well as other fees that will probably apply. There is also no such thing as a good, cheap semi tractor. A blown head gasket on that Cummins (not likely but possible) or a clutch job is going to jack up that $2500 good deal pretty quickly. Always expect the unexpected when dealing with big trucks. It all comes down to personal preference, but the semi may be more trouble than it's worth.

I WOULD GO WITH THE D-MAX MY DAD GOT ONE ABOUT A YEAR N' A HALF WITH ONE OF THE ALLISON 5 SPEED AUTO TRANSMITIONS AND WILL EASILY PULL 15000LBS ALSO WITH THE PICK-UP YOU WOULD GET MORE USE OUT OF IT IF ALL YOUR GOING TO USE THE SEMI FOR IS PULLING YOUR TRACTOR FROM PULL TO PULL THEN YOU COULD SINK THE $2500 INTO YOUR TRACTOR. JUST WHAT I WOULD DO.

I would sure hope that INT. would pull 15,000! Our 6.5 turbo will pull 15. If you we're to put a D-Max in front of that you shouldn't have any problem. What kind of Semi are you getting for $2500??? You find anymore of those deals give me a holler!!!
