M Puller Too

I have a 1949 M that I recently rebuilt from the ground up for pulling. I had the motor modified extensively, along with the carburator, cam, put on a computer controlled ignition system from Jacobs, 12:1 compression, 110 octane racing fuel, and custom tubular intake and exhaust. The motor is bored and stroked to 346 cubic inches. My cam is degreed for 1600 - 2000 rpms. I am buying a new Rocket governor soon then I'll be ready to dyno test it. I was just wondering how much horsepower I should expect from this setup. I can pull 3rd gear in 5500 lb class pretty easily. I know there are a bunch of you guys out there who pull M's and I would very much appreciate some estimates. My engine builder said to expect 80 - 90 horses. Is this accurate? Thank you.

That sounds like you went with a 4.125 Bore and a 6.5 Stroke or a 4.25 Bore and a 6.125 Stroke. I hope you went with the longer stroke instead of the bigger bore. The stroke is where you get your low end torque (LUGGING POWER). For a little motor like that you maybe geting 90 horses its all in who is reading the dyno. As well as pulling in 5500 hundred pound class in third gear is not that hard to do when all you have to do is put all your weight on the noise so that you can spin the rear tires, remember you didn't state how well you do in that class or how the motor reacts to that gear. All I am saying is that it sounds like you have a nice Divion 2 plus motor that should make your county fair pulls a little more fun for you, cause that is what tractor pulling is all about.

Yes more RPM's you would want more bore than stroke however, how many Open RPM pulls do you know of that you would want to enter with a tractor with only 90 horse? That is hardly enough to play in DIV 2 and maybe get lucky in DIV 3 as long as you aren't on a POWER TRACK. Around here RPMs and speed are watched very close and thats why you better have a strong lugging tractor. One other than to ask you is what good are RPM's when 25 thousand pounds of sled comes up on you. The motor is going to drop in RPMs to the point where you are going to make it TRUELY work or fall on its face. So you build what you want and be happy while I will pull what I built now that my motor can lugg down to 800 R's in the high side of second gear in the 6500 pound class.
