If you are fouling plugs, try checking the exhaust valves. I had the same proble too, but we decided to overhaul it.

If you are just going to pull in the 5500 class, put 4 inch high dome pistons with shorter valves. If you are looking forward to 6500 and up, and pulling only {no farm work} bore it and put 4 1/4 or if you can fit 4 3/8 in it with no sleeves. An M and a 450 motor are the same, just a bigger bore and head, but many 450's in my area run no sleeves. The only possible problem that comes to mind is it will heat up quicker.

I put Denny's 4.31 pistons in my C248 M motor and hit the water jacket before 4.25

a 450 block is cored thicker than an m block. you could never run 4 1/4 or 4 3/8" pistons againest the block with no sleeves in an m block.

If the "M" runs good, tune it up and "get a Hook". The more you modify them the more problems you are going to encounter. Pull it like its made,
you'll have fun and save a bunch of money.

If its fouling plugs and not smoking it may not be getting hot enough spark? Use some Autolite #386 plugs gapped at .023, put a bottle of Lucas Oil additive in the crankcase to help seal up wore valve seals and try it. Adjust the carb by running the bottom mixture screw in slowly as the engine is running about 1/3 open throttle,as the engine begins to slow down back it out until it runs the fastest speed and leave right there. That Lucas Oil additive will help any seal leaks plus give you a l;ittle ring seal on a tired motor. Give it a shot..... ..have fun
