I wouldn't go ruining a good old cockshutt
tractor.I'd just leave it stock. Here in Ohio they seem like they're non existant.

The factory 230 block can be bore to 3-9/16. Get a 273 Buda block as it is already 3-3/4 bore and can be bored to 4" with out resleeving. You wont have very much room between the cyl bore and the head studs so keep the comp ratio under 10 to 1. No room for o-ringing at 4". Go with a 262 crank it will give you 1/4' stroke. If you stroke much more you will need to knotch the cam. Just stroking the 273 with the 262 crank will be a world of difference over the 230. My $.02.
Good luck

Not much room inside of 230CI motor find a 262CI from a Gleaner combine will bolt right in give it a good tune-up it will give the M Farmalls a run for their money in 5500 and up stock weight class's and you won't spend much money with his set up and will have something for future building.

If your 40 is like my 30 with a Budda in it you can bump the piston size 1/8 with different sleeves. In the case of the 30 a Chrysler 4 will fit it. Maybe the Chrysler six would also fit and it may be easier to increase the Chryslers power.

If you want to change to a 262 you'll have to put the back plate and flywheel from the 230 on it. You'll also have to make a front motor mount. The 262 crank will fit right in the 230 and give you 1/4" more stroke. You'll have to knotch the factory cam or change to the 262 cam (already knotched). Stock 262 is 72 horse. 230 with nothing but 262 crank will run close to that. Right pistons, compression, and fuel setup will get you as high as 85.

If is like the other 230 engines.. the 262 sleeves will fit, but the oring grooves will have to be cut into the liners. this will give U a few more.. JDGnut
