I am thinking about having the head on my IH 400 shaved. I have stock pistons now. How much should I be able to take off? Also I was thinking about new/ bigger valves for better flow. What type valves are the best to use? Should I put the money that it will take to do this work and just put that toward a 450 lp head? Thanks for all the advice.

I'm going through the same thing myself.I was told that you wouldn't gain a whole lot on plaining the head, maybe just a little. It was recommended to have the head flowed. porting, polishing was also an option. You would still have your original head on that way the tech inspection would leave you alone. The lp heads are very pricy 1k on up,and very prone to cracking.
