I am 16 yrs. old and am wanting to get started in antique pulling. I have owned several JD's and Farmall's, and have even hooked green to red with a log chain a couple of times, but have never competed in a real pull before. I was wanting some opinions on the best class and weight to start in, also was would be the best JD tractor to start pulling with. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Blake

Being a MF man, I'd have to say a 165 in the 5,000 class, if you have it. Hard to beat. Problem is, the price for one of these is still kinda high. A 65 has the same engine, costs less, but is 5-12 years older. It's really up to you.

Being a Case man, i would say a DC or LA depending on what wt. class. For the money if you are wanting to build one up and not pull factory stock, you can build a tough 460 farmall for under 4 grand. if you just wanted a deere, i would suggest psychiatric evaluation, just kidding, i would go with a G. Good luck.

Since you specifically asked about pulling a JD, I would suggest a late styled A with the creeper gear. You can run 4500 through 6500 pretty easily with these. The creeper gear will let you get further down the track with less horse power, so you won't have to spend a lot of money on engine performance upgrades. Get a good set of hard, 1/4 tread tires, figure out the balance of your tractor in different classes, and have fun.

Just don't fall asleep at 150' while going down the track at that high rate of speed... :-)

Find a old DC Case they are cheap and easy to find. They will pull 4500 pretty easy by removing some weight and can make good power with little done to them lots of lugging power. Good luck with what ever you get and have fun.

On a 16 year old budget when you should be saving for school, the choices are other than a two cylinder outside of a true stock class. In the 4500lb class a Ford 801 can be pretty tough. A Massey 44 row crop can be stripped a little and sneak in. The tall 38" tires really dig in and the Continetial engine can be tweaked to make some serious HP and look stock. In the heavier classes a Case or Oliver with the Detroit Diesel can be pretty stout.

No need to strip a 44 to pull 4500. A set of steel press rears and you're there. I pull 4500 with 14" rear steel press and 15.5s, MH hubs, fenders, power steering, functioning hydraulic lift cylinder, pto, tool box, etc. Not any extra movable, but everything is still there.

Not sure about which one to really start with, I guess do what I did and start with the one you have. I made my first pull with an Oliver 77 and had a blast. There were 4 tractors in the class and I got 2nd. Got beat by a REAAALLLL Slow JD B:)

We just got finished painting a JD 50 with the 6 speed transmission and one of our friends who pulls alot says they are really good ones to pull. I guess we will find out in about 2 months!!:) A's are real strong pullers also and would be a good one to learn on.

It really depends on how much you want to spend as most anything in a given weight class is competitive with enough money. Don't be discourgaged if you don't win or even place in the top three right off though. There is a whole lot more to this pulling than horsepower and it is a learning experience at the first.

Blake, You'll get a million opinions here, but I'll give ya mine anyway. I assume you are going to pull it stock; Div. 1, and stay in the lighter classes? If so, here is my top 3; 1)Oliver Super 66
2)Farmall Super C
3)Allis WD45 The Olie will be competitve from #3000 to #5000, and will give a decent showing even at #5500, but they are few and far between and expensive when ya do find one. The Super C is plentiful, relatively cheap to buy and work on, and without a quick hitch can start and be competitive in all the same classes as the Olie, probably won't make #3000 with the hitch, (she'll really come into her own at about #4000. I pull one and took 3rd in the NYS championships, #5000, lost by 1.5' to a Super 66, and 3' to a late model JD A. The WD45 is too light/overpowered to work well below about #4500, but will run up to about #5500. No shot at JD, but unless you supe up a B for the higher divisions, you might as well wait 'till the #5000 class and start with an A.
Same with Farmall H's, and to some extent Super H's, in stock form, a Super C will almost always outpull a straight H, and be as competitive as a Super H, but give you more hooks by pulling in the lower classes.
In the higher classes, it's wide open...Olie 88, Farmall M's and Super M's, Case DC's, JD G's, Minnie's... the list goes on and on. Pete
