I am hoping somewhere out there in tractor land, that I can get some good advise on creating some horse power in my late model JD 70 gas tractor. I have approx. $3,000 to spend and I want to make as much horse power as I can. My tractor is completely stock and is in good condition. I plan on using the tractor mostly for pulling and show. I am not concerned about meeting vintage rules. Thank you.

Cubes are a great source of power. However, having said that, if an engine cannot "breathe" the inches mean little. The results from a carefully done tri-angle valve job and some roto rooting in the manifold ports can be astounding.

We had Kieth Merfeld do our 70 gas last year. We bored it to 6.100" and stroked it to 9.75". Kieth did the crank, welded the rods, notched the cam shaft and provided the pistons for it. A local machine shop bored the block for us. We clearanced the crankcase and assembled it ourselves. We did not do any head, intake or exhaust work on it yet. The total bill including the gasket sets was around $2100. We borrowed a dyno and I'll tell you up front that we are not certified dyno operators. That thing lugged down into an RPM range that the HP number was so far off that it was a joke, but the torque number should still be fine, and that was pretty easily double what the stock torque was. She was rockin' an barkin' so that we got scared and shut her down before she did something we didn't want to see. Feel free to e-mail if you would like to know more....ToddF

Put a V-8 in it, and have something Really Unusual..!! A fella here, in Ohio has one, and I hear he makes the conversion kits.... He used a GM V-8 Diesel..says it pulls a 5 bottom plow very well...it even still uses the hand clutch.!! FWIW... I think he is the "Vo-Ag" teacher at Buckeye Valley High School, Delaware, Ohio...

Extrude hone the head, a LP intake manifold and I think Crum makes an exhaust system. Once there is airflow then stroking, boring, cam, aircleaner conversion and compression can make HP.
