Hello, I was wondering what kind of tractor would be the cheepest competitive tractor for the money??? We have a 210 acre farm and enjoy going to the tractor pulls and are thinking of starting to pull. We like farmall's and deere's. Hauling is no problem. I had a friend of mine suggest a farmall M or a John Deere A. Have had antique tractor's but they were for the farm. Wanted to ask the experts. Thanks

Ive been pulling for about 3 years and i pull cases mainly because they were cheep. I got a few laughs at first but went to 12 pulls in va and wva last year and only went home once empty handed. Any brand can be a winner find one you like add go for it. At most pulls a stock tractor is more competive in the heaver classes.8000-12000.

I hate to say it but for the cheapest and the most competative tractor would have to be without a doubt is the molines because there split blocks will inter change.

I pull MM's but think a 88 would be the best for the money.

The stock two cylinder Deere's are very heavy per HP so pulling slow in 1st or 2nd gear is the result. Lighter tractors per HP can gear up and gain distance of softer/lighter tracks with speed.

My advice would be to run several different brands and models of old tractor and buy what you LIKE, rather than what will make the "best puller". Some guys would rather win at all costs, and select their tractor accordingly. I would much rather have a tractor that I enjoy running and working, but maybe doesn't win every pull than one that I don't really like but that wins all the time. When you get down to it, you're pulling for a $3 trophy and that's about it. You may as well have what you want, and if you're sticking stock-type pulls, pretty much any tractor can be reasonably competitive. Farmalls and Olivers can be hot-rodded easier than Deeres, but it certainly doesn't make them better tractors in my book.

It all depends on what classes you want to pull. Personally If you want to have fun and keep your expenses down I would avoid the 4500 and up classes. In those classes you will pull against M's, 44's, 88's etc that most likely have been "improved" by their owners. Therefore if you want to be competitve you will have to improve your tractor. If you have pulls in your area that are 3000 to 4500#'s an Oliver 66 or 77 or an AC WC or WD, or an IH C or H, or JD B etc. would be cheaper and more fair competition. Oliver 77 puller

M's, MH 44, Olivers are very competive in thier stock forms whereas JD's are not as competive without spending some money on the motors. I'm not saying that Deeres are not a good tractor in the field but when it comes to pulling they need help. I pull both a MH 44 and a Ol 77--with the 44 being the better tractor. I have trouble getting the 77 to hook to the hard tracks that we have in this area.

I have a 1953 Farmall Super"M" , that has the Mantle over the fireplace begging for more room . Thats where I keep my trophies . Its a good all around tractor . I am partial to Farmalls , but seem to read all the ads with Olivers Super 88's for sale . I am sure some day I will have an Oliver .

Disclaimer: I'm no expert. But for my free advice, which is worth almost as much as you paid for it....

It depends on where you are located, and the availability of tractors. If you want to stick with Farmalls or Deeres, go with the Farmall M.

I'd have to say that for the money, a MM U is a good starting tractor.

I would go with Oliver. They have the smoothest running engine of all the old tractors. They are usually first when it comes to pulling. I would get a Row Crop 88. They can pull in the lighter and up to the heavy classes and still be very competitve.

Only problem I can see with an Oliver 88 getting inthe light classes is more power than traction. I am not bragging ot bashing but my 88 in low gear hasn't bogged down yet in the 5500-6000 class and I am afraid that in the lower ones they would power out. I guess you could play the throttle and stop that though.

If ya like Deeres then by all means run one. They might not win all the tie abut around here (west Tn ) the are pretty competitive. Like one guy said above. it depends if you want to have fun or win all the time.

I have to agree with Slo. A moline U tuned good will usually get you somewhere in the top three places and you can't hurt them.

I have to go with Jerry on this one. MM's are a lot cheaper to fix up, plus so many high horsepower engine parts are interchangeable on them.---deadeye
