Hello -

I'm planning to enter my first pull next week. How about some tips? Is there more to it than use first gear and push in the clutch when it stops?

Thanks!

When you get to the end of the track turn around and bring the sled back

Tractor at max weight for class. Drawbar as high as legal for class. Balance weight transfer with drawbar length & location of cast iron weights so front wheels are barely touching the track when you spin out. Better 1lb too much tire pressure than 1lb too little. Drawbar drops less & the tread bars dig in rather than tip over.

It's a stock Farmall M - tires are liquid filled; otherwise no particular enhancements for pulling.

Thanks!

Take the fluid out! If you're not using the tractor for anything that requires the weight, then take it out. A stock M will pull best in 5000-5500# classes. Plus your rims will last longer.
If you're going to continue pulling it, turn the hitch mounts to the front of the axles and flip your stationary axle upside-down, this will raise the hook point to about 20". Either way, don't pull on the swinging hitch, that just puts the hook point farther back. You want it as close to the tractor as possible (legal).

If you can get the front/rear balance correct, a lightened tractor in 2nd or 3rd gear will usually go further. Than a heavily ballasted smaller tractor traveling slow in the same class.
