Rear end ratio

My 88 Oliver has the 10/47 gear ratio on the differintial. A friend on mine put a higher gear in his Oliver and he said it seemed to kill off the power considerabley.

If I go with a 9/51 setup can I expect to gain anything? Maintaining the 3.5 mph speed limit and keeping the revs up at the same time would be easier I know. But would the increased torque to the tires resulting from a lower ratio, cause me to spin out earlier or would I be able to idle the engine down and therefore lower the power in order to overcome/prevent premature wheel spin? Or would there be little to gain from such a change?
