I want to start tractor pulling in the local fair. I have a John Deere B and a Farmall H. What would be the best choice.

I don't really know, not too many guys pull B's in their stock form around here, so the assumption would be that the H should work better, but I haven't seen too many stock H's that pull real well either! We have added a '50 B and a '53 Super H to the collection this year, and plan on hooking both, so we'll find out soon. What I see happening around here is that the Super C's, Olie Super 66's, and WD 45's pretty much rule the stock classes at the weights B's and H's pull. Pete

A properly built John Deere can pull good, but an IH-H can compete with the M's, but has to be bored out with no sleeves in the block in the motor, just running the piston on the side of the block. Also need shorter valves and may have to mill the head down.

Thanks for all your opinions. I'll stick with the H though. It pulls a 2-14 plows better than the B. The H is 1950 and the B is a 1952. Once again, thanks. I'll let you all know how I do.

No B that is stock will outpull a diesel M. If so give me a diesel and I will add one thing to it and pull you across the country {turbo charger}. John Deere's may be able to out run the red's though {I'll give you that}

I own a late model JD B and a 1949 IHC H. Even with M&Ws in the B I think the H has a little more PTO power. However, the JD B has a little more drawbar pull. I have it on good authority, from one of my very bright and talented friends, that the one that you paint Persian Orange will undoubtedly outperform the rest.

I have pulled a stock 42 B John Deere in the 4200 lb class and it didn't come close to the H's that pull in my area. there were B's that wern't stock and they about the same as I did.

Maybe I'm over-simplifying this situation, but the obvious answer (to me at least) is to pull them both. I know some pulls allow a tractor to only be entered once per class, but I've set to see one that only allows a puller to be entered once per class. Our local pull has a provision (we draw for pulling order) so that if you're pulling more than one tractor, they'll give you plenty of time to get off one and on the other. More hooks = more fun.

I have a 51 B. I just had to pull it to see what would happen. there were 3 Hs in my class. The class was 4500. My tractor weighed around 4300, and theirs all weighed 4500, because they had suitcase weights, which gave them the advantage of having weight on the front fo the tractor. My B is just stock, with no water in the tires. It has the original motor, with no modifications. Even though the Hs had weights on the front, and I had nothing I pulled the same distance as they did. three of us tied exacatly. The other was ahead by almost 2 feet. Two of the Hs stalled, and one just spun out. My B never even got a good pull on it. It never even popped loud. My problem was that the front end came up. As soon as the front came up the tires spun. I think if the rules allowed me to use second gear I would have been better off, but the rules said first, so I crawled down the track at half throttle. It was my first time to pull. It was a blast. As far as which tractor to use. It is 6 of one and half a half a dozen of another. They are both great tractors, and you will have fun pulling with either. I have a B and a super H, but my personal preference for all day use is the B, because of the easy steering, better seat, fuel economy, and it seems to have quite a bit more power than my all-fuel Super H due to low compression ratio of the all fuel engine.

In models built before 1947 the nod has to go to the Farmall H, in later models built from 1947 through 1952 for the B and 1953 for the H, I'd say it's a toss up because the later B's had more power than the earlier models and that "combine speed" low gear. Late B's pull real well at heavier weights in bone stock tractors.

Get you an Oliver. No but really the H would be better than the B if they are both bone stock.
