Does anybody know what the differences are between the grinds on the late style JD-A and the 620 cam shaft?

From what I have been told according to John Deere service specs the cams from the styled A's through the 630's were all the same.

According to the J.D. service manuals they are exactly the same. Look in the section that covers the valve timing events (intake open and close, exaust open and close). Some gains can be made by advancing the cam, and custom grinds will certainly help, but it takes a lot of trial and error to get it right for your engine as head/manifold/carb flow characteristics will be different. In general leave the exaust alone except for more lift, and increase the intake duration by 20-30 degrees and as much lift as you can get. Mike

Thanks for the info. When increasing the duration of the intake, where do you add it in relation to the existing lobe? Should it be opened sooner, closed later, or a combination of both and what is the combination? How much extra lift can safely be added with the stock valve and spring?

Toddf..i agree with mike add 18 to the opening and 2 to the closing if you do add a lot of bore and stroke..small amount of bore and stroke add 18 to the open and leave closing alone or 2 less..you can grind the cam .380 or .390 with no problem..give about .560 lift compared to .430 stock..if you want some cam specs e-mail me..lynn
