What do you perfer to use on a almost stock puller? I have been told a mag has a hotter and longer spark than distributor. The mag is a H-4 farmall. Thanks.

Use whats origional. Pulling stock it doesn't make a difference. Anyone out there who doubts a mags ability to spark hot, ask yourself why the $100,000 top fuel dragsters use them???

There is more than just spark to consider here. A properly working distributor will advance the spark timinmg as engine rpm's increase; this gives you a better power curve. A mag only has 2
timing settings. Start and running. With a mag,
after the engine reaches 200 or more rpm's, some weights inside the mag swing out and advance the timing 10 to 20 degrees. If you listen to some tractors using a mag, you will notice that at idle some sound like they are laboring just a little bit. Too much spark advance at idle.

It is my understanding that a magneto will actually make a hotter spark but it takes more horsepower to turn it than a distributor. I have run both types of ignition systems on a variety of motorsports and racing applications and I believe that its a toss up. Put your energy towards something else.

I have always been told that a distributer is hotter, but on an almost stock tractor, a mag should be plenty fine. My grandpa has a JD A that is mostly stock, and he runs a mag and it runs good.

Thats what a older tractor puller told me. He said a mag has a Hotter spark and longer. I really don't know.
