Hi guys:

How many modifications does it take to swap out motors from the 4430 to the 4020. I'm wanting to hop up the power quite a bit for pulling and this would be the easiest way. I'd probably have to replace the stock clutch to hold the power. I'd like to get it to 150-200 horse. Are the motor mounts, radiator, and hydraulic pumps the same? I have another hood to modify for the turbo. Is this a simple project or will it take months of modifications? I plan to keep the original engine and everything so I can farm with it or sell it if the need occurs. I don't want to butcher her up too much. Any help is appreciated.

John

If there are no rules about stock blocks, I agree with Scott. Any idiot will be able to tell the difference between a 4020 block and a 4430 block anyway, so go with the 6076. They are much stronger from top to bottom than the 6404 out of a 4430. They hold their head gaskets better and come with a much better pump. I wouldn't bet on your stock 4020 internals living long behind 200 horsepower, though. Have you considered building a narrow-front 4430 or something along that line? The 6076 would still be a bolt-in, and the Perma-Clutch/Quad-Range or Powershift are much stouter trannies than the 4020 Synchro.

If you are gonna go through the trouble of swapping motors, go ahead and find a 55 series 6076 to swap with. It's not that bad to do, as long as your pulling club is not set on running a stock block.

With the 55 engine, you get the best head, as well as 466 cubes.

Scott:

What all will this swap require? How much electronics are involved? What do these engines cost used? I'm only wanting 200 Hp max.

Thanks

John

The 6076 in the 55 series is still mechanically controlled. You have to get into the later 60 series and early 8100/8200/8300 before they went to the electronic pump. You should be able to get 200 horsepower fairly easily. You'll also need to substantially upgrade your cooling system if you plan on working the tractor for any length of time, as the factory radiator isn't going to cool 200 horses in the field. You'll probably want to go with a 4555 engine, as they are non-intercooled, or install the regular intake on a 4755/4955 engine. You won't need the intercooler to make 200 horsepower.

I don't run any of the electronics at all. Most of everything will bolt right in. Except for the two bolts in the front of the frame rail on my 4010 don't match up really good, had to cut them out just a little.

I think the engine in my tractor came from some place in Northern IL that does JD/IH ---> cummins/cat power. Engine had some hours on it, but runs good. I just bought another one for $1500, out of a burned cotton picker-----I thought that was a steal. Most of the time the 55 series heads will go for over $1000 alone.

Let me rephrase that! The one I just bought for $1500 was from a guy here in North Carolina--not in Illinois. I don't know of the name of the place in IL that replaces the engines. When I bought the tractor that I have now, the 6076 was already in it. I think the guy I bought it from gave about $3500 for that engine about 5 years ago, and all that was guaranteed is that it was running when it was removed.

Scott,

Do you still need an input shaft for your tractor? I had not heard from you in a while and was wondering if you were still interested.

Be alot better to just turbo the 4020 and open pump up. The right turbo should make 150 to 170 hp. Need alot better clutch ppa assembly.
