Took the M to a pull last weekend to test out the settings on the carb. I kept turning out the power screw for each hook and I've still got more room to go. But I having trouble keeping traction on the rear tires.
It's got real good 13.6 x 38 Firestones on the original cast wheels and rims with one set of wheel wieghts. I don't see much reason to switch to steel rims when I need the weight back there anyway. The front bracket had a 100 lbs on it and would still float a little. I've got a belly bracket coming for it to bolt in place of the swinging drawbar, but I can't see it making much difference if I move that 100 pounder to the belly.
Any ideas what I could do to it easily to get more traction for this weekend. I'll probably build a light front end for it this winter, but I need something simple for now. I don't want to cut the tires either.

Here is what I do,place the weights where you want, pull fourth or fifth in class to see how others do adjust your weights, then adjust tire presure so tread bars make even cotact with ground, set drawbar, and good LUCK

The first thing i would do is get or make a back bracket. This should go back past the rear axle but not past the wheels (with weight on it). E-mail me for some more sugestions

Let a little air out of the tires down to 6 psi. if that don't work get bigger tires.

I also pull an M at first I had a real traction problem. I would never pull down the motor just spin out in division II stock class. I transfered as much weight as possible to the rear of the tractor, I know this seams strange but an old tractor puller from way back gave me this info
remove as much stock weight as you can and then put it where you need it. I have 300 on the back wheels stock and 500 as far back as I can get it.
350 under the middle. I can now hook and pull it down, now I am faceing a horsepower problem. This is in the 6500 class, I havent figured out how to hook it up in 5500

Russ, your comments on your performance are pretty modest...you've come a long way since your first pull in California. In fact, you're pretty tough to beat. I know a guy with a Farmall M who puts ALL his weight on the rear axle no matter what weight class he pulls. His bracket is situated so the weights hang forward of the axle which helps the front end problem. There'a a pull in Otterville this Friday at 6:00...maybe I'll see you there?

You don't say how far your drawbar is set back? Keep it as short as allowed. Have a large hole for the hook in your pullin drawbar so you don't have to use a clevis. Some say 1 inch of db height = 2000lb of weight.

I don't know what class you pull or how big the wheel weights are But I would take them off put the Belly bracket on and add hanging weight to it .the track will make a change.

Took the M to Drakesville Friday night, hard clay-gumbo track. I needed 200 lb. to make the 5500 classes so we brainstormed a bit and wedged them in the drawbar against the axel housings. It really made a difference. Had a problem getting the M to tach up in the low gear class (only came up to 1000 RPM, haven't figured out why), but she came back in the open gear. Pulled the front wheels up pretty good. Going to try to get that belly bracket made. We're talking about building a complete light weight front end for both M's for more transferrable weight.

13.6-38 is not enough tire for a m unless you are on a real power track. You need to go to 14.9 or15.5-38 to hook up.In the 5500 class just run rear weights on the wheels. In the 6500 class you'll need to run at least 3 weights on the back, the rest of your weights on the front. All tracks are different so you will have to try this to see if it works.Also,23degree FS tires are not the best.
