Which is a better tractor to build up with out breaking the bank? Maybe $1500 MAX in the motors. I have a late styled B and a later Farmall H. Both tractors need rebuilds, so I would be starting from scratch. O know that An JD A or and IH M would be better machines to start with, but am somewhat limited to what weight I can pull and put on the trailer. I had been considering the "H" because I have a spare block, and was going to punch it all the way out and install hi domes, do some head work, and a cam to see where that went...but, I am more familiar with JD's. I just heard that you can put a ton of cash in them, and still not have anything. It would just be a lower class. I also need to know in there is a 3500lbs class to run in. There must be. I am in SW Mich, and if there is anyone near me, I'd like to talk about it. Thanks

The only people that will tell you to pull the B are John Deere people. All of the other pullers will tell you the H is better.

I have a farmall H that I pull, I have around $1500 in the engine with me doing all the labor to rebuild and install, very little machine work was done. The consisted of oversized high compression pistons, rings, and sleeves, crank grind and gaskets, bearings. not much else was done, the tractor still smokes on startup due to valve guide wear. I did a very light porting of the head.
This tractor now pulls great for an H but still gets beat by a "stock" JD B with a creeper gear.
Oh well, it's easy to get lots of money tied up in a puller!

AC, your late styled B probably has the 'creeper' first gear - because of this, a well tuned B with a stock engine will always have plenty of power, will always spin out at the end of a pull. The Farmall would need some performance items to keep it from powering out. Weight Class - my '51 B weighs 4460 lbs, cast wheels.

Thanks...I was talking to a guy that was considering trading both of them and cash for a late M that has a SM kit in it and an M&W 9 spd. Maybe I'll go that route...There is definately more parts out there...Andy

The classes up to 4500lb are very tough and have many competitors. Larger tractors are more difficult/expensive to trailer from pull to pull.

So what I have gathered here is: The H's make good power, but the B's hook up better because of the creeper first gear and seem to make a little better low end grunt. See, beeing about 1/2 polish, I see it like this...My blood is red, but I can work on green...My Irish side kicks in and says...Nothing a 6 pack can't cure! Thanks, all AC
