I had bought an engine (jd4020) that had steel main caps made and I want to put new bolts in. THey are longer than stock, does anyone make them, ARP maybe, or could I just use grade 8 bolts? Thanks.

I'm not a 4020 hot-rodding expert, but I think Grade 8 bolts from a reputable supplier would be more than adequate, as that's basically what the originals are. I would also recommend using hardened flat washers under the heads, as were found on the original engine, and lubricate the threads and bolt heads with engine oil. I would also torque to the original spec, as there's no sense in over-stressing 35 year-old block threads. My two cents.

DON'T use grade 8 bolts.Get ahold of Riverside Engines in Tiffin Ohio, they build hi-hp deeres 1500+hp,they can get you what you need. Now if this thing is going back together basically stock just go to a JD dealer and order them from parts.
