I don't pull, but have read this board and others, and a question keeps coming to mind- I often see mentioned about successful M.H. 44's in several classes. What makes them so competitive? Also, why don't I ever read about any Massey triples being run? What are the triples weaknesses? Thanks- Mike

WHAT????? ????? ??
I have been reading this board for over a year and have only heard negative comments about the massey's, but i have seen come alive in the div 4, but there is a guy around here that has two pretty close to stock that just can't compete at all in a div. 2-3 class

They are a "high" HP to weight, fast ground speed tractor that can squeeze into the 4500lb class and wear at least 15.5x38 tires. I don't know what they do to those old Continental engines? There are two local low buck 44's that the flag man trots to keep up with in the stock 45oolb class on a sticky clay track.

The 44" has a long stroke. My 44 Special will hang in there in 5500 lbs class with 14.9 38 tires, the old thing just keeps on chugging and have never powered out. There are few M Farmalls that can compare to it where I pull.

It is funny that you don't see more of the triple's because you have the same motor in the 44's as the 444 but you gain about 150 r.p.m.'s on the 444.

The scarcity of Triple's is a numbers issue, not because they are bad pullers.

The 444 was made for 3 years: 1956, '57, and '58. Compared to the 44's reign of 1947 to 1955.

Also the 333 was made for 2 years: 1957 and '58.

Please keep in mind that at this time the company was transitioning into Massey Ferguson and the focus was not necessarily on the Harris line.

Factor into the equation the number of Triple tractors that had "live power take off" and this will reduce the number of pullers even more. The "live PTO" on a MH was a clutch on one side of the differential which, when released, opened one side of the differential allowing it to spinf freely. This feature would have been more appropriately named "live driveline disconnect".
