I enlarged a 44 to about 400 cubes. When I got it running it hardly runs on 2 & 3 at idle. Compression is even all around. Electric stuff is good. When you "goose it" it smooths out and when you put it it high gear it jumps up and goes. Anyone have any ideas? I used a fairly big Marvel carb. It seems to be working ok.

Too big ports, valves and itake manifold can cause fuel seperation as well.

I believe G T is right. With the larger carb the velocity slows down and the two ports nearest the carb is getting raw fuel that is washing down the runners. The fuel may be falling out of a state of suspension. All this is assuming the valves are adjusted right and you don't have a vacume leak. Check the burn on the plugs and rotate the motor and view through the s p holes at the top of the piston for excessive wetting on the piston tops. Tipically sooty black areas. A restriction on the exhaust side of those two ports could cause reversion and the higher rpms are required to overcome the contamination.

With one single carb the middle cylinders will always run rich and the ends run lean. A large carb/cam makes it more noticable.

If it runs good, what does it matter if it misses at an idle? Some of the best tractor cam grinds will have the same problem as you are talking about. You could fix it with a different cam, but you will lose some power.

I would like to thank you the explaination. I have had this problem for a long time but was too dense to see the simple solution
