I am pulling a 70 john deere with 13.6 rear tires. Pulled in the 6500 farm stock class and didn't do so well. Here is how the tractor is set up. Rear wheel spacing is 85 inches out to out of tire. draw bar is 24 inches from center of back axle. Pulled with 100lbs on front and none on back(couldn't in order to stay in 6500 class. Tractor didn't even choke out ,tires just spun out. Front of tractor never even got light. Please help.

Thanks,
Matt

Matt,
70's and G's are pretty heavy out front. I pull a G, and for the 6500lb class, I put 270# on the back, and I am set. I found out that with the newer tires that I have, that 4 psi is about as high as I can go and still get decent traction. It all depends on rim width vs. tire width, and the construction of the tire. Just experiment with different set ups, and listen to the advise of others with similar tractors.. they generally have them set up that way for a reason!
Good luck, and keep trying... it's addictive!

Don't get disappointed in your first pull, you have to start some where and you make adjustments for the next pull. Don't be afraid to ask pullers questions at the pull on your setup (especially those pulling the JD-G or JD-70) as most pullers will help with advice. The other posts have given good advice with the hitch in and as high as the rules allow. I run 12# of air in my tires (16.9's) for 6000# class. You need to find a way to shed so front end weight, I've lost 50# on my JD-A just by going to a 15" rims and small profile tires on front. Another thing that will free up some weight is pressed wheels with 14.9 x 38's or 16.9 x 38's, the taller and wider tire will give you less slippage and more ground speed which may make your front end a little lighter.
Don't give up on the 70! They do quite well in our area in the 6000# class along with the JD-G's (which is what I pull along with a JD-A)you just have to get the right setup. Good Luck and keep asking Questions.

I pull a 730 Diesel and a G. Since you're spinning out, what everyone else has said about moving your drawbar is a good start. I'm not sure how a 70's drawbar is, but on the 730 we had to drill another hole in the drawbar where it connects to the belly of the tractor. I'd pull in first gear if you weren't already. Also,I'd find some wheel weights and weight up for the 7000 or 7500# class if your pulls have one. The 730 pulls better the heavier it is. I've never had to have more than 300 lbs out front. Better to have the front on the light side than heavy. I've found on that on old john deeres you can throttle back a little to bring the front down if you need to, and they'll have enough torque to keep on moving. You've got enough power, and 13.6's shouldn't bog you down, so weight her down some and work on balance. But with all that said, you can't always go by one pull. Some tracks you'll wish you had wider tires to get a bite and others what you have will grab fine. Of course, grandad would say this is free advice, worth what you paid for it. I don't have to worry about you compeating with me, the club I pull with has had every pull but the first one rained out so far.

Other than drawbar length and maybe tire pressure
It sounds like your doing everything mostly right for the class your pulling in. In the area where
I pull, the 70 JD's just don't ever make a good
showing. They just don't seem to get the traction
they need to the rear tires. It's a real fun sport
so don't worry about getting beat, just have fun.

first I do not pull a JD I pull a massey 44 special . put i would first move the wheels in as close as you can. move draw bar in as close as rules will let you {most are 18in. from center}and get the max height of the hook point check the rules 18 or 20 in. high in our pulling area. and get the weight on the rear. i pulled on saturday in 6000 and won 1st with 18 tractors in the class. my 44 weighs 5280 bare and i load all weight on the rear front will come up at about 95 % trough the pull. please don't take this the wrong way but the JDs in the 6000 don't do well at all in this area. any way have fun with it and also read the track thats also a big part of it run a differnt pull line

Matt, first off if the rules allow, put the drawbar in as close to the rearend as allows. our rules allow 18" from center of axle. not to be smart, but if you can only put 100lbs. on and you spun out, it's obvious you had too much on the front end. this is a guessing game until you get more pulls and different types of tracks to pull on. hope this helps, good luck and most important...HAVE FUN!!!
