I know this is an antique forum but thought some of you may know the answer to this question anyway. What is the difference between the engines in a 966 and a 1066 IH, and are they easily interchangeable?

The only difference I know of is that the 966 came out of the factory non-turbo and the 1066 came out of the factory with a turbo, and the manifold on the 1066 slightly different because of the factory turbo.

The 1066 has the same motor size as the the 966, but the 1066 has more horse power than the 966. COMMON SENSE!!! The bigger the number the bigger the tractor!!!

Baystatebinder is right the turbo is the only difference. Well there is also a small difference in the hood as the turbo makes the hole possition different where the exhaust pipe comes through. Other than that I can't think of any difference. Later, Greg H.

Didn't the 966 have the high flow head because it didn't have a turbo? Seems like I've heard that somewhere.

They are exactly the same 414 cu inch. The 1066 has a turbo and the fuel pump puts out more fuel I think the pump is the same. They both turn 2600 rpm.

The differance is in the head and the pistons are differnt and the pump settings are differnt also a 966 uses a 12 inch flywheel and a 1066 uses a 14 inch flywheel and clutch. There are other small things .

One piece of information you might want to be prepared for if your putting a 1066 stock turbo on your 966 is, a 1066 has a little bit different fuel tank configuration to make room for the turbo

the compression ratio is higher on the na motor, the turboed motor has oil sprays that spray oil into the bottom of the piston, and the oil pump is wider on the 1066 motor, the early 815 combine with the 414 and the early 966 head did not have valve seats, all the heads weather 426 427 0r 888 part no have the same size valves, hope this helps
