My John Deere A always seems to spin out. I have plenty of power with the 60 block I put in it. I'm thinking its my tires...12.4 x 38 long shorts. I ran about 10.5 psi in them. Does anyone know where I should place my weights? I'm thinking about getting some 15.5 x 38's for more traction... would that solve my problem? I think that she would be able to turn them, I have yet to pull the engine down. Thanks

I'm planning to pull 5000 -5500 - 6000 if i can cut down to 5000#. I thinking I should put most if not all the weight on the rear end. Made brackets to fit on the loader mounts. As of right now my draw bar is at 16" from the ground and about 18" from the rear axle.

Look for a set of 14.9 x 38's or 15.5 x 38's on 14" rims about 1/2 to 2/3 worn preferrably from road use. Stay away from the long bar short bar tread pattern, and look for a Armstrong, Titan, or Firestone tires. Run around 10-11 lbs. air pressure for 5000# class and 11-12 lbs in 5500-6000# class. That is what I run in my JD-A with Firestone 15.5 x 38's in those classes. As for where to put the weights, watch other similar tractors in your class to see where they put theirs weights and adjust accordingly. You want the front tires to just leave the ground about 1-4 inches toward the end of the pull. Set your hitch up as close to what the rules allow for as you can get it, that will help with the traction also. Good Luck!

i would get some sharp bigger tires, and pull a little heavier class. Also while your pulling ride the brakes so one tire doesn't spin faster than the other, and if your front comes off the ground just cut the gas down.

Thunder, I have the same problem with my 51' A, I'm running road wore goodyear 15.5's on a 14" pressed steel rim and have always seems to spin out at around 150-175'. I usually go from 5500-7500 and always fill my back racks first then the belly bar and then the front. I've tried 3 different drawbar setups. If you figure it out let me know. If you want to know more on what Ive tried drop me a email.

I pull a 1951 'A' in division II, 5,500 and 6,500 lbs. I run 15.5 x 38 Firestone Field & Road tires and have not powered out in 100+ pulls. I have pressed steel rims on the rear which allows me to put 300 lbs on in the 5,500 lb class. It usually all goes on the back and the front will usually come up at the end of the pull. 6,500 I usually put another 600 on the rear and hang 400 under or near the valve cover. The front will start to get light at about 200ft depending on the sled & track conditions etc. Hope this helps. Have fun!

Thunder, the late A has an extra low first gear, that's what makes it such a good puller. It will never power out unless you load it up past 8000 pounds. Set the drawbar as high as the rules allow (usually 20), lower the tire pressure, & have fun.

We would like to help you. You need to give us more info about weight class, draw bar,(how high and how long??) rim width. Where you are placing your weights? Earl
