I just pulled for the first time (farm stock class)and I've got lots of questions. I've got a 1947 Farmall MD and I pulled 815 inches and weighed 6058 lbs. for a score of 165.5. Not bad but not good. I think I don't want to add any more weight because I was already the second heaviest tractor there, only an Oliver Super 99 was heavier. I ran out of traction before the engine was even starting to smoke. I have three questions:
1. I've got like-new 12.4X38s on the rear and I ran 12 lbs of air in them. Does lowering the air pressure make a significant difference and if so what is about the optimum?
2. Would larger tires make a significant difference, like 13.6s or 14.9s? I don't want to spend the money unless I'm sure it would make a difference.
3. What is the formula that is used to determine score?
Thanks for any help, I thoroughly enjoyed the pull and plan on doing it again next year. Brian

The tallest tire with the max alowable square inches of ground contact area seems to pull better than a shorted/wider tire of the same square inches in the ground. Ballast the tractor to be max legal in the class. Ballast for/aft & adjust drawbar length to be just boucing the front tires as spinout occurs. Have the drawbar max legal height & rear tires inflated tight enough so hitch height isn't lost as the weight transfers onto the drawbar. 23 degree Firestone Traction Field tires seem to be in the winner circle more than the others.

The larger the tire size the faster the tractor goes down the track. The bigger the better. A stock md will perform best with larger tires. The tire pressure should be as low as it can get without hurting the side walls. Track conditions make a difference of course. We pull with anywhere from 8 to 10 pounds. Also can the draw bar be adjusted. Get it in close prob. six inches from the rear of tractor and up as high as they allow to get more down force on the tractor. Read the track before each pull. Walk out and try to find the holes so they can be avoided. Good Luck

I would switch to 13.6's. That's what we run on our M's. 12 lbs sounds good for a start. You'll have to play around. The track condition is a big part of traction. If you're spinning out and have the power, move weight to the rear.
I don't know about the scoring, we just go by distance.

You boys tug pulling or what? I've never tugged before, and I wasn't aware of any scoring system. I'd be interesting in learning about this too. By the way 13.6 or 14.9's would be better for your tractor generally speaking, but air pressure is something you'll have to work out depending on your tire sidewall, and track conditions. Later on, Greg H.
