I can't get over the article in the HOOK about those DUETZ tractors!! As you may know I am from Northern Indiana, and our pulling club is part of a unique tractor pull in Goshen Indiana, during the Elkhart County 4-H fair. The ATPA puts on ALL of the classes that they offer! We have a pull scheduled the same day and time as the big boys, there is 2 tracks, side by side not more than 25 feet apart. Antiques, and the ATPA what a day for pulling that is!! Anyway, the reason I am telling you this is because of a certain DUETZ tractor that pulls in the Super Stock division. The tractor is called "The Underdog." It pulls at Goshen every year, Have you ever seen this tractor? Man, does it run good! I did not know that the DUETZ tractors were air cooled! What an advantage! Did they make a gas version of these tractors?

We have a 70% payback system. You all know that this is a sport of bragging rights, not alot of money. If we had 25 tractors in a class, (50 hooks, 2 hooks per tractor per class) 1st place would pay around 75.00. I could not tell you exactly what the payback would be, but it is 10.00 per hook for members, 12.00 per hook for non members.

I liked the article in HOOK also, I thought she did and excellent job.
I have heard about the Underdog,it was built originally by the Stauffers in PA,they are the only other people I know who pull Deutz.Stauffer Diesel has been into Deutz along time and is business now rebuiling Deutz powered equiptment.
The Underdog was an 80-06,I am not sure of the mods.I haven't seen it pull but my friend that built my 130 has.His dad and the Stauffers were both dealers in the 70s/80s.I understand it pulled well.
The friend,I referred to,Wally Kassner has a pro stock Deutz....maxxed!!!He knows how to twist an ear.It is impressive!!!
The air cooled engine is really nice, people always ask..does it get hot?I reply by putting my hand on the exhaust, they can't believe it until they do it.Its warm but but not hot, unless you just pulled.Where it really shines, when the sled has to be reset and a couple 3 tractors have to repull...others will be boiling over...Deutz pulls best when heated up.Deutz started air cooled engines in late 40s early 50s.Were liquid prior to this.
Yes,they had gas engines,as the article in HOOK states Deutz had the 1st 4 cycle engine!!This was gas.Their 1st diesels were in the early 30s!
The 1st 1 was a 2 cyl cross motor diesel.In the 30s they produced a single cyl(11hp)2 cyl (30hp)
3 cyl(50 hp)the smaller ones had electric start, but the 50 used one cyl to compress air for the next start up,before running on all 3 for actual work! Hows that for advanced.
When is the pull you referred to?I might try to come.
Take Care, Lots O Luck

Living in SW Missouri I see Kasners Deutz pull every now and then.It ran great at ElDorado Springs,MO several weeks ago and got two 1sts.Krouthead,I believe I saw you pull there too.

For years the Hawthorns in Wisconsin have pulled a strong Deutz(Lil Green Giant)? similar to Kassners.Has been at the MO State fair pull several times and runs good.

Todd Anderson from Lehigh,IA pulls a strong 9300 lb Super Farm Deutz. He was down to Outlaw pulls at Garnett,KS and Peculiar,MO a few weeks ago.Probably will be at MO state fair pull in Aug.

If you love tractor pullin, come to Goshen Indiana!!! Without looking, I belive it is on July 24th, I think our boys would love to see a different type of green besides Oliver&JD! They have a golden oldies pull, I think there is 4 or 5 classes of this, From 8500 to 14000 "Farm Stock" 5 mph speed limit. I think it is pretty open rules after that. We offer antique classes 56 and older, 15.538 limit, wheelie bars a must in modified, 18 in center of rear axle 20 high. farmstock is 28in from axle 18 high 1st gear only, I think if you have 18.4s, they would let you pull, sure there will be complaining, but its worth it if you kick their A$$!! I will tell you that if you are a puller, you have free admission to the grounds and all access to the tractor pulls and pits. It starts at 6am for the antiques, and if you stay for the entire show, you will go home about 2 in the morning. There is every kind of pulling you could ever want to see, from stock tractors, to unlimited modified tractors, trucks, semis, multi engine tractors, garden tractors, and antiques. There is a class at the end of the night called the cement truck shootout. all the local cement companies pull their cement trucks. Some times the Army will bring out a tank to try to out muscle the sled!!! I would enjoy to see you there, You may have another pull scheduled for that day, thats OK!! If you would like any more info let me know. ChadS.. PS.. Yes, I belive that the DUETZ was ahead of its time, that was and still is incredible tecnology.. Later..

We had about 10 semis show up to pull, they give a real good smoke show.. yes there is camping, and electric hook ups. I recommend showing up the nite before to get a good parking spot!! I am not sure which rule you want, big tractors or antique. The big tractor specs are for ATPA super farm rules. I don't have the rules in front of me for the big tractors, I can post them later, here are the rules for antique:::

I will try to make it short and sweet and to the point...

1956 and older. 15.5x38 or 14.9x38 max tire size(all classes)

Modified classes: 4 mph, distance pull. 4500,5000,5500,6000,6500,7000,7500 are the weight classes for all tractors. 2 hooks per class 6 hook limit. front weights cannot exceed 11 ft from center of rear axle forward. Hitches, 18 from center of rear axle, 20 high. we have a rule that the front end cannot exceed 20 inches from the ground, they attatch a chain to the front of the tractor to measure this. (insurance reasons) any cut on tires allowed.

FARM STOCK::: must be stock in appearance, weights can only be mounted in a stock fashion(to the wheels) 28 inches from axle 18 high. wheelie bars recomended, but not required. 3 mph speed limit, 1st gear only. un cut tires.

10% over rpms (not really enforced)

If you need rules for the big tractors, I will get them on here with contact #s let me know Chads

Yes, I wish they would get "modern" and let us run bigger tires like 18-4s. I know that there are tractors in our club that run 18.4x34s in the farm stock class. It says in the rules that western type tractors may use a 16.9 or larger tire if they are offered in the parts book. but the rule is under the farm stock division. our classes go up to 7500lbs. Unfortunately, you would probably have to have a 14.9 or a 15.5 to pull leagaly in the club. Me personally, I don't think you need an 18.4 to be competitive in our club. Here is some insight about our sled and track. Our sled weighs about 25000 lbs they will put on additional weight as the classes get heavier. the heaviest I have ever seen the sled was 35600lbs. Our sled always has trouble stopping us at this particular track. It is a good clay/little sandy track. which tractor in the hook will you bring? Belive me, if thats you in the hook, you will be the talk of the town, if you come to Goshen! Here is another fact about our sled, A full pull on our sled is only 210 ft. When we pull the 25000 sled, we average a distance of 195 or better with my Hs. Do you have an Email address or a fax? If so I will send you a full copy of our rules.

I am going to Ny to get 1 tractor for sure and maybe 2.I put a living area in the front of my semi trailer,so I can only haul 3 tractors now.
So I thought I might bring the 80-05 and or D65
travel to Ny get tractor(s) and go or come back through. The 80 pulls 7000-10000 ,but has 18.4x38s Cuts,D65 pulls 5500-8500 and has16.9x34 non cut(these are legeal for Natpa in 5500)
I would be half way there at your pull !
My tractor has a metal factory tag on the frame that states its weight with 18x38s would this allow it to pull? For distance not that % shit!
With that track/sled/rule combo...probably just bring D65 and get 2 in NY.
Yes, that is me in HOOK and I am proud to be in it,but that doesn't exempt you from gettin' stomped at the track!!!ha ha
I apperciate the info...Thanks Alot
Would I be pullin' aginst you in 5500?(smilehehe)

If I had Something Wilder running again I would be in the 5500 class. I have 2 other Hs I pull in the lightweight classes, I have a 54 SH farmstock, and a 50 H in the mods. My 50 is about 70 hp. I don't know if it would run well at 5500. Who knows? I just might go 5500 just for fun! LOL ChadS
