How far is the limit of stroking, before a rod change is needed? I will probably go 1/2"

Rod length is a contentious topic & depends on who you ask. Custom rods built by Crower, Manely,Cunningham etc are strong, light, reliable, avalable in custom lengths, custom rod/pins sizes & straight or offset caps for cam/block clearance. A longer rod does reduce side thrust which reduces wear, power loss & inproves ring seal. Dwell time at TDC & BDC is lengthened for more efficient use of combustion pressure & better breathing. That being said some builders use & win with stock rods anyways for either cost or they are running out of deck height after stroking. At BDC the short rods can be sideways/angled enought to make a person wonder how the engine runs without binding. Custom pistons with a raised piston pin solves some deck height problems. Block or head spacers appear from time to time as well. Most automotive engine builders use longer rods if the budget allows.

You will have to change either the rods or the pistons to offset the 1/2" you add to the crank. The easiest way might be to have pistons built with the pin hole higher so as to enable you to use the stock rods.
