How would a stock but good running Moline U standard fare out as a pulling tractor? (in a stock class) Were they easy to modify without doing a massive engine overhaul? I would think that they didn't make the horsepower, especially when compared to the weight. One guy said to get rid of the 30" rims, get bigger ones, and try it out, but I don't know. Are there any others who have Moline U pulling experiences? I really don't know much MM, so I am trying to learn. Thanks, AC

In a true stock class a U is very strong. I pulled one for a couple years and done real well. They are very easy to get 100 plus horses out of with very little work compared to the other brands and have loads of torque. Concerning the cam you would need to advance it one tooth.

In a true stock class, a stock U will hold it's own and then some.

Yes, they are cheap to modify compared to other brands. Change the cam timing one tooth. Change to LP heads and gain compression. Bolt on jugs from newer models (which would be factory replacements) take you from 283 to 336 cid by increasing bore from 4 1/4' to 4 5/8". G crank makes it a 403 if you go to 4 5/8" pistons. You can go up to 5.5" pistons and 7.5" crank.

A standard will be a little harder to balance than a row crop, because it will be even more nose heavy. Might need to run a longer drawbar to help the balance. Definitely switch to 38" rears.

I don't have a Minnie, but just out of curiosity, do you advance the cam in relationship to the crank, or retard it? I'm assuming you advance the cam timing.
