I would like to build a tractor for the outlaw class, what cubes and rpms would you get from each tractor without a lot of work. I heard the
ollies can go over 500cubes but not many rpms as the IH460 and the 460 is limited to about 400 cubes but more rpms, how about the t/a advantage on the 460?

What kind of rpm's are you allowed? If class allows high rpm's I would go with the Oliver. Take a 310 engine and you can get 400+ cubes pretty easy and with a converted diesel head and everything else to match, it will turn 6500-7000+ rpms. There are alot of these running around like this and they scream!

Yes, with an aircraft carb (Stromberg updraft) and alcohol.

First you are going to have to define "a lot of work".

The answer is probably going to be 460.

a lot of work meaning can I exchange parts
or do I have to get everything machined, esentially I would like to drop in a crank, rods ect. from a larger engine and not spend the money
getting everything made to fit.
Thanks

If the 460 gas is a dry sleeve block you could buy a cheap set of pistons that will fit the block after the dry sleeves are removed and honed. There should be plenty of cyl wall thickness to hold what ever compression you come up with. Offset grinding the crank to match whatever set of rods that will give you a zero deck clearance with a thick head gasket should be cheap enough. I would prefer the rpms to cubic inches of you can get withing 50 cubic inches of a larger motor you are pulling against. If I could find out the Deck height I might could help you. Chads should have some good info. After you figure all that out then you can make a decission on the cam.

I belive that it is a dry sleeve motor. I know that a 460 is one of the most feared tractor, at an antique pull. I would recommend boring and stroking the engine depending on the HP you are looking for. I would give it more stroke instead of going for the biggest bore. I belive that the cyls would hold the pressure better without distorting the block or sleeve. At high rpms, the stonger block is the way to go. If you are allowed to run a deck plate, that is a good way to hold the deck of the block together. I have a H farmall that was big bored, had 325psi in the cyl at cranking speed, the deck cracked between the cyls. My point is, make sure the block is in perfect condition after the machine work.

What are the rules for a outlaw class? Can you use deck plates, girdles, turbos? how many rpms do you intend on running? What are the fuel specs for outlaws? What are the weight classes? I would suggest hitting the salvage yards ad finding the old 403-503 IH combines. They have a wide range of cubic inch ranges from 224 to 282. A 806, 301 engine wold be a good bolt in engine. or maybe put in a 361 in the 460. I have a friend of mine who has a 460 with a german diesil in it, converted back to gas, he says it runs well and makes lots of power for an open class. I could not tell you how or what was done to it, but it can pull the sled in 5th gear, and it is not turboed!!
