I have a '49 G that is all stock. I would like to modify for pulling. I also attend plowing events, so I want it to be reliable in hot conditions and under full loads for extended periods of time. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I have a friend who has a late G with a flat head but still runs the cast pistons. He is fairly competitive but he still likes to plow the back forty. It is sometimes hard to have the best of both worlds of farming and pulling. I guess it all depends on the competition. Drop me an email if you have any questions

kcoston---put in a good set of M.W. or L.P. pistons perferably the M.W. and a F-486 Flat head and a cold manifole, also a F-900-R cam. An all fuel 70 head would be a dandy choice, but very veiw laying around with the 70 head you could use the two barrel carb, your pulling buddies will probably squak about this an put you in a open class.By all means get rid of the oil bath breather, this thing really sufficates the engine. When you set the engine up give the pistons at least 10-12 thous. pistons to cyl. clearance,I'm running 18ths. but strickly a puller. there are some pretty sharp guys on the board so you'll probably get some good tips. hope this helps a little. Gman, I am also building a G puller where is the best place to find these parts. Another Question how do I turn up the RPM I am pulling a stock class now that will let me go 15% over. Thanks for the help!

T. AGGIE--JDGnut has some great ideas kind follow what he said. On My "G" I have the LP Distr. set at full advance at 1200 rpms. I installed B gov. weights in govenor, and it is real responsive and it isn't fighting you throttle, and I am thinking of triming some more weight off,I made a error when I rebult govenor and it wasn't working engine was a little hard to control but I haven't done as well sence I corrected the govenor, thats is what got me to thinking,on a puller you need just enough weight to keep engine from running away, anybody got any ideas along this line? Gman.. I'm not too sure about this combo for the pulling and field work.. This is basically the combo that I pull with, and it is great for pulling.. and cheap.. but with the M&W pistons and a flathead, I have to run high octane fuel... which is high$$$$ for plowing.. If it is just a plowing comp.. this might not be too much of a problem.. She will have HP.. (not like a stroker.. but enough to have tons of fun.) Jerry's machine also sells a nice after market manifold or go with the gas manifold where the #1 exhaust goes around the back.. (with a flat head this manifold will probably have to modified.)

Aggie.. I'll probably be pulling against U soon.. we pull in the Central TX area.. pull in Clifton, TX on the 1st, and on in Columbus on the 15th.. email me and I'll give U some info or whatever.. If you want to add some RPM's you can shorten the linkage between the bottom of the throttal handle and the long spring on the governor.. Or you can turn the long spring on the governor so the hole is on the engine side. On mine, I have two springs installed, one hole in front, one in back and I can move the rod location if I need too. All of this increases the pull on the governor, and gives U more RPM's, also make sure the linkage from the governor to the carb is adjusted correctly, so it is opening up like it should..
Good luck
JDGnut
