I am needing new or used side shields, a hood, and possibly fenders in good condition for my Oliver 88. Is there anywhere in Indiana that sells different parts for antique tractors. I looked in some of those catalogs that sell them, but they are too expensive. Any help would be appreciated

If you get the chance, you might want to try to get to the tractor show in Portland IN this week, or on Saturday. They have a huge area of vendors, with all sorts of tractor and gas engine parts, pieces, etc. for sale.

They show officially runs through Sunday, but most of the vendors have packed up and left by Saturday night. The vendors range from Joe Blow and his junk wagon to several catalog dealers.

well, the best thing to do with your 88 is to start it up, put it in gear , hop off and forget about it, get you a John Deere, well..if uyou want to win.

Shohn,
I was gonna give you pointers on getting your A into second gear, but seeing as how you're ragging on an Oliver 88 man, I'd guess you've figured it out already. Otherwise you'd know better. Nothing wrong with having alittle JD pride, but arrogance and ignorance go hand in hand. Shohn you have to remember that tractor pulling is not about farming tractors anymore, it's a motor sport, with set ups and modifications, tires, balance, and everyone wanting to get the edge. Virtually any tractor can be made to run hot, that's why the whole arguments over who made the best tractor based on how they pull on the track is so ludicrous to me. It all boils down to how much is spent or modifications made to make them pull that way. In our little club alone, there are Farmall SM's, and Oliver 88's with 15 to 20 thousand in them. You've either got to be prepaired to spend money to win, and desicrate a perfectly wonderful classic tractor, or go out and have some fun with your A the way it is. Better yet sell the late model A to a collector that would apprechiate it and go out and trash an unstyled G. Regardless of how you do it, I wouldn't make fun of other brands. Good Luck to ya, Greg H.

I have an 88 that I will gladly pull against any john deere 2 cylinder any time!! It hasn't been beaten by a deere yet,I guess thats because a deere can't compete in div IV, Oh by the way just so you don't think I hate deeres I own 3 of them,Fun tractors but not a tractor that should pick a fight with an 88, Around here the deeres rarely win in Div II either, its usually oliver or farmall that takes the trophy home. Thanks for the fun coversation,no harm intended. Hi Rich, since we're talking about the "Hook" magazine take a look at page 35 bottom right corner. The results of the "worlds expo" in Des Moines Ia. Looks like a John Deere A from Nebraska got first place in 5,500 division II...and not an Ollie in sight...Hmmm. No offense.

You're right about how competitive the ol Ollies are. A Oliver 77 narrowly beat out my B JD Saturday way down in 3500 lb class. They ought to. Pounds per HP they should be that good. Dad told me they are rated higher than an A JD and probably 1000 lbs lighter. That guy did beat me, but I'll bet he sure took notice when that overmatched 44' B gave him all he could handle. That match ain't over yet. I'll get him one of these days. Fortunately for you Oliver owners, you don't need to do much to make them run; John Deere guys have to really spend big bucks to make them come alive.

Bring a Deere to a pull against an oliver, is like bringing a knife to a gunfight!

Thanks for the help. That Shohn fella is a friend of mine thats not quite all there. I like John Deere's, but you can modify an Oliver a lot better. Antique John Deeres belong in front of a plow not a sled.

Here's what I know: I pull a john Deere in Division II and there are very few Olivers that can touch me...my competition comes from other Deeres and sometimes a Farmall "M" or a 560. Now in Division V those Ollies rule...along with a few other multi-cylinder tractors. It all depends on your "frame of reference".

Actually it's more like corn pickin'. I go in 3rd or 4th gear when I'm plowin'.
