I have a 1941 JD B that needs overhauling. I am considering any tips on gaining horsepower seeing that I have to put the labor into overhauling it anyway. I am not planning on it being any type of a professional pulling tractor, but in the same token I want it to have plenty of power beyond stock in the event that I encounter a challenge from a friend or neighbor at the local tractor shows. Thanks a lot.

It depends on how much time, effort AND money you want to invest. I have a 44 B, and let's face it, while stock, they are really weak. I bought it last year, pulled it once just for fun, and it did horrible. The 1996 Two Cylinder Mag. (July/August) featured the early styled B. On page 2, they said the HP was increased to a whoppin' 11 HP on the drawbar. In 3500 lb class, you are really in trouble. This early Spring I took out everything up to the crank: then pondered, should I just bore it out, put new rings and pistons in, or keep going and stroke the crank, and everything that goes along with it. Soo, I went ahead, and pulled out the crank (not as easy as it looks), and sent my crank, rods, and cam to Schooler Motorsports. They stroked the crank, lengthened the rods, and exchanged my mild cam for a pulling cam. They conveniently had a late model B block and short pistons and rings already there. Presently, it is punched out to 4 7/8 bore x 7.25 stroke.....increased volume and compression too. Now I can easily pull 3500 in 2nd gear, up to 5000 lbs (1st gear of course). It is a "bear" to start(hand start), but now l don't worry about running out of power. I'm very pleased with it's performance. The way I look at it, the internal work is all done. I was thinking, what if I didn't go to this extreme? Would I regret only going part way? Try explaining that to your wife; "Dear, I'll have to overhaul the tractor again, it doesn't quite have enough." My wife would go ballistic. You other pullers know I'm talking about. Well, just my thought's..... a matter of preference. Good Luck

I agree if you're going to tear it down to put more horsepower in it you might as well do all you can and be done with it.Don't send a boy to do a man's job!!!

hey, i am rebuilding a A john deere. i have been asking around about the two lunger john deeres and here is what i have found. i dont know if they make a power block for a B, but if they do then thats one way, bore it out and get more power, adjust the carb, strait pipe and good radiator for keepin cool, and i would suggest haveing weight brackets for higher class, the two cylinders seem to do better if they get the chance to pull down rather then spin out. good luck , oh and they say a dry air filts is gopod but i dont know how much there is to gain there
