I just bought a farmall 400 for pulling.
The engine needs rebuilding and i was looking for some tips to gain some added power, but not go too crazy.
I'm new at this and only plan on going to a couple of pulls a year. Thanks!

I did a Super M last year, thats about the same casting as your 400. I'll tell you what I did and what I wish I'd done.
Did. Milled the head .180,three angle valve job, smoothed the ports out a little. A good carb job, polished venturi etc. A M&W 4.125 piston and sleeve set. Advanced cam timing 1 tooth.
Wish I'D done's 4.25 pistons and sleeves. Chevy valves. I've done well pulling 8 first's 2 seconds 2 forths and 3 did not place. that extra HP form the 4.25 bore would be handy. You can use Chevy 409 pistons without sleeves if you want to save a little $$.

No you do not need custom rods, the compression height is the same and the pins are 1" same as 400 and 450 .The M and SM pins are larger but you bush them to size. The downfall is then you have the groove where the sleeve flange was,I was told that you can have the flange machined off the old sleeves and 271 locktite them in place and the head gasket and head will then hold them in place.
