I am planning on building an M farmall 1st gear class puller and would like to get info from someone that has installed w6 ring gear and pinion to speed up ground speed. How fast are they in 1st gear with 14.9x38 tires. Also am looking for 4.250 or larger pistons and a stroked crank. Want to install a crank that does not require grinding camshaft for clearance etc. Already have a 400 LP block and head to use.
I need to run stock type Rpm.

Is there a company out there that make different ring a pinion sets for IH tractors?

I would recomend finding a 9 speed transmission that was built by M&W. That or going out and finding an M with it already in it. Just my 2 cents.

I don't get it..is there a MPH limit or just a
gear limit....i wouldn't go through all that
trouble....we have a 3.5 mph limit and in 4500 we
pull 2nd at almost wide open....that is alot of
work for around 1/2 mph increase

The question I had about the ring gear and pinion is how much faster will it make the M tractor go in first gear,[1940 M] than the original set. I will be pulling in 5500 lb class requiring 1st gear use only and was looking for more ground speed and have heard of the use of those gears. I will also run 6500lb class and would like the power of the stroked crank.

I DON'T KNOW ABOUT 1ST , BUT 2ND GEAR 20.8S IS 7.5MPH . WITH 18.4S IN 4TH I RUN 12.5MPH WITH THAT SETUP.

The classes I have spoken about are have a 1st gear limit and no speed limit, that's why I would go thru the work of changing gears etc. and engine work to turn them

what kind of class are you tring to pull in?? If you went to a different ring and pinion, you would definately need more power. You could put in a 6 in stroke without a lot of clearence work. You could run a 4-3/8 bore, (chevy 454, 427, chrysler 440) pistons, with up to a 7 in stroke by using H rods. I have read in another post, that JD4020lp or gas pistons will work in an M with out any mods, as long as you used the M rod. Hope this helps some, Chads

Chad, what length of stroke crank can I use in my C169 Farmall 300 engine. I want to keep the stock 3 5/8 bore? Also is there any stroked cranks available for a Farmall 264 IH Diesel?

I think you will find that the w6 rearend is the same as a M's. You will have to find a I6 to get the faster rearend. The w6 rearend is the same as a M only has different axles.

The W-6 has a faster ring and pinion, due to the tire size difference. It will bolt right in.
