I have a Custom model B with the 230 in it. Like the other guy said, it is short on low end torque. I pull mine in Outlaw classes which is any rpm and any gear. It will turn 6000 rpm's before it starts to float out. It still will not pull in the upper gears because of the lack of torque. Clifford does not make anything for the Chy. flathead. There is a guy in California that works on them and makes a special head for them. Most of it is machine work on your own. The 251 and the 265 engines are some better but comes back to the lack of torque. Being how there is no official manuals for them, who is to say what you can and cannot turn. Hope this helps.

I wasn't aware they didn't make parts or that the custom was a flat head. The only one i have seen had two dueces or two singles. However all engines in farm tractors use recprication pistons and there is always something to be learned. Knowing now that it is supposed to be a flat head i would search the web for a write up about building up flat head fords. I am sure it covered how to make a flat head breath.. Would probably also have some info on how to make stronger valve springs fit that wouldn't float.

Have you ever pulled in or around Middle Tn. The custom i saw really turned some rpms but when the box got up closer to the top of the sled they fell off pretty fast. Still enjoyed seeing some guy pull and have a good time.

the wards and customs all had the fluid drive converter in front of the transmissions..the simpsons and lehr big boys did not. they had chrysler industrial motors with cast pistons inside for longevity..car or truck motors had aluminum..look for these for replacement..also few cars had the aluminum finned heads..kinda like the flathead ford edelbrock or lakes style heads..better for compression..there is a 102 super massy harris around here running a 265 with a 330 crank i beleive he said..helps with stroke..also a simpson and a wards running in the matpa..very competitive

A guy in the Western Mass. Tractor Puller Assc. has a Ward with a torque converter attached to the clutch. We pull stone boats and he does real well with it. He puts on quite a show with the wheelies.

There is actually quite a bit of room to stroke one if you use an angled rod cap. You may have to trim into the side of a couple of the cam lobes. The block can be bored .125 over giving you 3 9/16. There is also a lot of material that can go on the intake ports to increase your flow. If you want to know the fastest way to port the block, shoot me an email.

Pete.

Lacking a little on low rpm torque IMHO. Clifford Research would be the ticket to aftermarket manufactured parts.

WWW.clifforperformance.com Sorry, i still remember the old days when the name was differant.

Hope I spelled it right. If not do a search for clifford performance or six cly. There moto is 6=8

If you can locate a disscussion board linked from their sight or something i would start lurking there and come up with some info or call them. I believe they also have a catalog. They are the authority on building strong six cyl. If these outlaw allis wd pullers and olivers with the 292 and ford 300s :)ever find out what they know then they will start getting another 20 or 30 feet easy. IMHO
