Is it possible to get a 70 JD into the 5000lb. class? I am building a 70 gas now and have already gotten rid of the powertrol, cast rear wheels, replaced the radiator with a small car style one, hydrolic pump, fan shaft, air cleaner, and I am useing a small plasic lawn mower gas tank. The tractor doesn't have power steering and I am going to replace the roll-o-matic with a front out from under a mt-420. What would be your guessamation on what it would weigh? What else could I do to reduce weight?

Wow lots of responses but I didnt here any weights. I pull a JD70 in Michigan with 16.9/38. Lots of aluminum, and I'am 200lbs+. With all this it's 5350lbs with me on it. I have a MT front end that could go on it, and I could make a few more things out of aluminum but why unless I go with smaller tires I'll never get to 5000lbs mabye not even with smaller tires. It's is realistic and I would like to know but for me why try? We do not have a 5000lbs class but 5250lbs would be nice.

Removing the entire oilbath air-cleaner assembly & installing a K&K or Holley oiled-mesh cone filter will drop weight & add HP cheap.

James,
As for lightening up your 70, i shaved several pounds from a 60 by removing the live pto cluch housing and cutting 1/2" plexi glass for a cover. Not only does it look pretty trick, it also allows you to view rear end oil level and condition. Also,if you are interested in selling the front-end you are removing from the 70 let me Know what you want for it and what region of the world you are from. Here is my E-Mail Tractorman@hotmail.com

I have seen a 70 with big cubes in 5500 in my area, I pull with the guy once in a while. It was one nasty machine only problem was he couldn't keep it together,It either broke or he ran the sled out the end.I believe he built his own narrow frontend had a lot of aluminum on it too.Best of luck.
