My 1999 F-250 diesel super duty has a 5 speed automatic/overdrive transmission. It has 48,000 miles on it.
Presently I am getting a bad shift from 2nd to 3rd. It appears to hold 2nd gear too long and allows the rpms to climb to about 2400 and than snaps into 3rd gear with a vicious shift.
I was road testing last night at very easy accelerator applications and kept getting this hard shift. Then I tried punching it once and I thought I was going to lose the transmission
The tranny stuck in 2nd gear, the rpms soared to over 3000 and then snapped into 3rd gear. Has anyone out there had a similar problem? What I am I looking at in repair cost? How would you analyze my problem? Do I have any recourse with ford motor company as far as waranty?

We have a 97 ford E-150 conversion van with the 5.4L and four speed auto. overdrive transmission. At 30,000 miles we had a harsh shift from 1st to 2nd gear. The transmission was rebuilt and works fine. Try this site (http://www.alldata.com/recalls/index.html)
it may help you. Good Luck!!!

Merle,
same thing happened to my brother in law, only it was at 35,000 miles. Luckily, it was under warranty, and ford replaced his transmission. I have also heard from a neigbor down the road that his powerstroke is having the same transmission trouble as yours, but he has something like 60,000 miles on it. I don't know what to tell you that will help you, but just know that transission problems seem to be fairly common with people who use their powerstrokes to pull heavy loads. I don't think I'd want that much engine and an automatic transission. Sorry about your problem. Greg H.

I am currently having the exact same problem with my 2001 f-250 diesel. That describes my problem to a tee. I took it into the local dealership's repair shop and they wanted to rebuild the tranny. I have 41,000 miles on my truck and have never pulled a real heavy load. The diagnostic code that they gave me was p0782. If more people have the same problem with their trucks then maybe FORD is the likely culprit for the problem.

My 2001 sdps blew a trans at 41000 mi. Luckily I had bought the extended warranty. Last week I was pulling a light duty trailer in the foot hills and the second trans. slipped (with about 15,000 mi.)I have talked to several powerstroke owners that have had tranny problems. Apparently the diesel engine has too much torqe for the inferior ford transmission. Pretty bad when the consumer cant get a dependable truck for thirty grand plus.
