A rebuild question

Digging into my '46 A Deere during my restoration and rebuild efforts, I was dissapointed to find that the con-rod bearings are not only shot, but the babbit of the bearing is cast into the con rod and cap!

Since I can't see how you could possibly replace these parts, I'm wanting to switch to the precision-insert bearing type rods that deere switched to in their tractors just shortly after mine was built. Since I'm going to have the engine apart to do this, I figured I'd overbore it a little and get a rebuild kit to go along with the new rods/bearings and crankshaft (which I plan to have machined).

Now I can't seem to find anyone that sells this stuff! I figure I can probably find a set of rods at the scrap yard, but don't know where to go for the bearings, which I figure will have to be a little oversize after I get the scoring machined off the crank journals.

And I can't seem to find anyone (other than deere) who sells an over-bore kit for the '46 "A"

Can anyone steer me in the right direction? I'm probably not ever going to pull with this tractor, I just want a good, working tractor, and figured you guys'd be the best to ask.

Thanks-

chris

Chris You can repour babbitt bearings!
It's not easy but can be done, I guess it depends on the how original you want to stick with.
Insert bearings are a better deal but if you would want to stick to the babbitts Linsay Publications has a very good book on How to pour babbitt bearings. It is a 44 page practical how-to heavily illustrated booklet that will show you how it's done, It is $7.95 and is very informative
Check it out at>Link
There catalog is free and is filled full of interesting how-to books everything from building your own furnace and pouring your own casting to build a hit miss engine to building your own machine tools. Bob

Chris I just completed an overhaul on a '51 B,I had the rods bored out and inserts installed for forty dollars a rod,so talk to your machine shop and see if he can fix you up. Cornett's Machine shop in Somerset Ky done a good job on mine. If you install alum. pistons be sure to give them at least 10 to twelve thous. clearance, those big old alum. piston grow alot. Gman
